Cheap woodchuck round
« on: August 23, 2011, 08:45:06 AM »
I have been playing around with working up a cast bullet load for Deer in the 3006. I am casting The Lyman 170 GR, bullet in Straight WWs with Red dot powder. Over the Chrony they are a little over 1600 FPS. Very cheap to load and they sure take the wind out of a woodchuck at 100 yards.

I'll bet they do!!  I really like cast loads for the 30-06 at 1600 or slightly less.  Like you have discovered, they're not expensive and are a hoot to shoot. ;D   My grandkids think I'm nuts for squirrel hunting with an 06. But with the Lee "soup can" 110 grain bullets and Trail Boss powder, the only concern that I have is a positive backstop. :D
Life's too short to waste any of it,

Best of both worlds. light recoil and cheap. I had stopped using the o6 for everything but bear a few years back. Kind of nice to get the old girl out a little more.
I got the idea from a guy on another forum that’s been using cast in 45-70 for a couple years on chucks
