Just Had an Earthquake
« on: August 23, 2011, 09:14:16 AM »
It was a 5.8 about half way between Richmond and Charlottesville, very noticeable in the Washington DC area.  First one I've ever experienced - stuff moving around and falling off walls - really pretty scary 5 seconds or so.  I am definitely not going to California.

You know people laugh when I tell them we had a earthquake here, Oklahoma, but it happens a lot.
Ours are not of the magnitude of the left coast, but probably as often.

Kind of wierd really, most go undetected by casual observers.
But we have several reporting stations around just to keep track of them.

I bet some folks back there are ready to move.  When the Earth starts shaking it kind of does something to ones psyche.  You no longer feel safe.

I remember the first one I went through, I was in California.  Scared the heck out of me.  That was back in 1969.  Took me weeks to get over that one.

Here in Alaska, we have two or three a week here that I only feel when I am in bed.  Little ones usually below a 5.  You only feel them if you are in bed, or sitting down.  Most people don't feel them because they are driving, walking, or actively doing something.

I keep thinking about the New Madrid fault along the Mississippi.  What is going to happen when it goes.  Scientist say it's overdue, and that it should be a real shaker.

Then every once in a while we have a good shaker up here.  Last real one we had that got us going was a 9.4 back around 1999 or 2000.  I was shopping in the Commissary at Ft Wainwright with the wife.  She panicked and tried to run out of the building.  I grabbed her and sat down beside the freezers.  That way if the roof fell the freezers would provide a space to survive.  This one shook the pipeline and caused needless concern over it's well being.  Broke several windows, and cracked walls in my house.  It's strange seeing concrete floors with waves running along like they were made of water.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I get email alerts from NOAA with Tsunami & Earthquake events and was really shocked to see that 5.9 quake from Virginia today.  Like Sourdough, we get them pretty regular here in Oregon, just not magnitude as in Alaska. A 5.9 would get yer attention, that's for sure.

I felt it sitting in my chair in my office.  Couldn't figure out what it was until Kathie called and told me about the quake.   :o

Felt it in Northeast Ohio. I was fishing froma a pier and it started squeaking and moving back and forth. Felt pretty strange but nothing like the quake of 1986. Now that was something!

I felt it here in NE Ohio as well (South of Akron).  Pretty odd feeling, didn't know what it was at first.  It was the first quake I've felt - there have been others but for one reason or another I didn't feel them.

I didn't feel a thing in western South Carolina.  I was told it happened by a neighbor, but nothing unusual here.

It had to have been caused by gas well fracking in Pennsylvania.

Years ago we had a small one close to home. I was on a ladder at the peak of a 2 story apt building changing a security bulb. Now that was spooky, I definitely had a good grip on that ladder. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

We should stop doing everything that could have adverse effects on Mother Earth, which is just about anything; therefore we should do nothing. I heard the quake occured on a previously undiscovered fault line, and the scientific community has moved quickly to proclaim it "Bush's Fault".

Earthquake in DC and Colorado. Was so glad to see Obummer was safe. 5.9 earthquake yawn.
We have dailys, no big deal. Look at the faul lines in Cali and how many quakes a day.
At least we don't have tornadoes and floods.
I can rest easy knowing Obummer had the situation in hand. Sorry folks no worries till you get over 6.0 and then it's a matter of what kind of ground you have sand , granite etc.

5 seconds of shaking is nothing, the morning of the Whitier quake, I went to check on my kids. The floor was rolling and I was trying to put my pants on. I was jumping on one foot about 10 feet. Then went for the other leg. Quake lasted about 30 seconds you could see the cement floor rolling like waves. Hey but we don't have tornadoes and floods.

Well, I heard this was a new fault line going through DC, called "Bush's Fault".

I also heard Standard and Poor downgraded the earthquake to a 5.2.

Morning everyone,

Well the rumor going around up here, is that it was along the newly discovered Obama Fault line and the root cause was all of our founding fathers rolling over in their graves at the same time.. :o

If I had a choice, I would rather have some earthquakes instead of fruits, nuts and liberals. Maybe even some twisters, mudslides, and hurricanes. Heck just about anything other than fruits, nuts, and liberals.
