5.9 Earthquake - Mineral, VA
« on: August 23, 2011, 10:14:36 AM »
All ok here in Pulaski (about 100+ miles west and a little south).

(I think it was aimed for the Senate  ;)  :o  ;D - maybe next time.)

It shook the building but nothing fell off of any shelves.

pushing on the back of my chair..... an odd feeling since I knew no one was behind me.....
then I looked  at the equipment in the wood shop & it was shaking isde to side.... the ladies
on the sewing floor had all stopped working and were talking excitedy not sure what had just
happend... one of them said I thought I was getting dizzy... I wanted to ask more than usual but
bit my tounge....  ::) No damage just a little shaking in Virginia Beach.....

What's all the ruckus?  Only a 5.9 and short duration.  Nothing to get excited about.   Maybe some jars of pickles and such need to be cleaned up in stores, a few tall chimneys need some brick work fixed.

Wall Street thinks Washington DC is destroyed in an earthquake and the Dow Jones goes up over 300 points.  That's funny!

They don't have fiscal resposibility, what makes anyone think they would take responsibility for ANYTHING else. He's the '5 year old kid that blamed his imaginary friend for breaking the lamp in the living room'... and never grew up. (my rant for the day)

Glad to hear all is well in the east and no wit hurt.

Since it was in the DC are, I expect damages will be in the billions...the is the mature of the beast.

They had our  Montana Governor Schweitzer on the News this morning telling how he has kept the Montana  state  budget in the black for the past 6 years...he told the talking head he runs the state like a ranch, etc, etc.

At the end of the interview the talking head said it has been rumored the Gov. might throw his hat in the ring to run for Pres. the Gov. said no, he has a border collie and it doesn't like skunks and he didn't think the dog would do well back in DC. I about fell out of my chair laughing, the talking head didn't get it.

Humm maybe this belongs in Tim's other post....

We were having lunch at a roadside diner south of Albany NY after our visit to the Watervliet Arsenal when the whole building shook, like some others reported we felt like we were dizzy for alittle while and then noticed overhead lights swaying.  It was great conversation starter, the whole group of people in the building immediately started asking 'did you feel that?' just to reassure ourselves we did not imagine it.  What gives with North America?  Earthquakes, a Hurricane coming up the coast towards us, if you want us to leave just say please and point ot the exit. ;D

President Bush has Volunteered his expertise in Disaster management to President Obama, Obama declined, saying that he has enough experience in disaster management himself, between both of them they have managed to cause nearly every Disaster known to man!

Meanwhile, photos of the damage are being released.  VERY GRAPHIC!

I've been a lurker here for about a year, I work for the school division here in Louisa County, and my office is located just ourside of the Town of Mineral.  About 4 miles from the the center of this quake.  We have extensive damage to our high school (only one we have) and to one of our elementary ( 1 of 4).  I have spent the last day and a half in assessment of damage, planning on what to do (we are in our second week of school).  Have closed all school until after Labor Day, and have been gathering student belongings at the high school (back packs with cell phones, I-pods, car keys) and planning how we are to reunite with rightful owners.  We tagged them with class room and student names if availalbe.  I live about 13 miles away, my pack parrott and house and family are fine, no damage that I have found, nothing fell off the walls or shelves.

Halsey -

WELCOME to the board! Glad to hear of your (personal) no damage.

Let us know if there are needs that some of us could meet.  I'll be over on the 2nd for a shoot at the Cavalier Rifle/Pistol club range (the Ram Bash).  It usually starts  just after noon.

We'd love to see pix of your cannon when things loosen up a bit.

Welcome aboard, htgreen3! It's a shame that it took an earthquake to get you to make your first post ;), but I'm glad that you did, and I'm also glad that you didn't have any injuries to report.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Thanks for the kind post.  Trying to recover the loss of two schools is draining the brain. and we had a very good after shock last night around 1 am.  Anyone got about 80 modular classrooms just sitting around?

My joke around here is that I can save some demolution money by letting me get a bunch of cannons together and do a little live fire.    Cat Whisperer - Can you tell me a little bit more about the 2nd for a shoot at the Cavalier Rifle/Pistol club?  is it for cannons?  Cavalier is just down the road.

Halsey -
It is a 200 yard (over 32 caliber) 40 rounds at a metal ram (hence the name Ram Bash) on the first Saturday of every month.  Cast bullets only (plain base - no gas checks).  Single shots and levers only, no bolt actions.  I used my .458WM last time, you will see a lot of 38-55's and 45-70's in Win High Walls.
