45lc Ruger chamber throat reamer? KNOW WHAT WILL DO NOW, THANKS!!

I was wondering if anyone rents out (or even makes) a tool to open up the throat (like a reamer) of cylinder in the 45lc, like you can rent chamber reamers. Or is this something to leave to the pros? I have rechambered guns, so I know you can rent them. I like to work on my guns myself. Not everyone has a mint to spend on gunsmiths. I have not even checked the throat yet, that way it wont bug me if they are not right. She shoots good now, but she could be better, and everyone on here has the idea that it would help the groups if they were opened up. I would like to make her better.

Some folks are accomplishing it with make-shift techniques; not sure I want to take a chance like that on my gun. But there is also a mention of a reamer from Brownells that is well under $100. I may eventually get one and use it on my gun; there is no doubt that it is undersized. I might sell it to you at a discounted price once I use it.

That's good info, Lloyd. I had looked at his website and wondered about his work. If a fellow doesn't think he is likely to ever need to do but one gun in any particular caliber, he'd be better off to send it to him than to buy the reamer.

So what did you decide? The price of the reamer has gone up; its now $80, probably be a little over $90 with shipping. The cylindersmith guy charges $30 + 12.50 shipping, and I guess it would cost me another $12.50 to get it to him, so I'd have $55 in it going that way.


So the choice is $55 to get one gun done, or $90 to do the gun and still have the reamer. If I ever did another one, I'd be money ahead to buy the reamer. Plus, I wouldn't be taking the risk of mailing a cylinder. It might wind up like my Colt and stay gone for months.

going with cylindersmith and see if my brother wants his done at the same time. But I do worry about losing it, traded for a 22lr barrel and have never got it and that was 2 months ago. so I see your point but not going with uspo going fedex or ups

Reports I have from some are that FedEx does well, and I have had good luck with USPS. Insurance and delivery verification are your friend (maybe who ever sent that lost item to you didnt use such safeguards?, or do you really know it was sent; ie, have you seen a copy of the paperwork?). UPS seems to 'not like guns' and I wonder if they have some anti-gun gorillas working there. I have seen pictures of very well packed and padded guns being completely wrecked, as if on purpose, and the claims denied. I lucked out on one sent and broken to me but it took about 5 months. and a sympathetic claims adjuster who happens to be a hunter. If you have trouble with them just once you will surely get the idea.

yea I get the idea and the tracking # the person gave me on the 22lr barrel was not even the right first two #'s. So I have my wonderings on that front. May be a bought lesion if you know what I mean.


But here is the deal do I really need to ream the throat she is small. But I can print little groups with a 4 5/8"s gun at 30m as small as 18shots all touching about 2 1/2 to 3 inches and can hit a can in the air, hit shotgun shells lined up, and took the head off a snake at 5yr just yesterday at the shooting range. What if she comes back and don't shoot as good. I love her and she is at my side all season's and some of deer season I use her to hunt (got a small doe with her last year at 35 yards) what if this makes my baby shoot bad. I just don't know what to do, ever one said it's the thing to do but the throats are small. Lots of praying to do on this. Thanks

I have some machining tools and experience.....and 30+ yrs of gun (and other precision) work behind me. I can spec out a device, and have blueprinted some stuff, and can fret a measurement as much as the next guy. I can also take something that isnt 'quite' right and shoot it and have fun and have learned to say 'it is adequate'. Giving myself permission not to have to 'fix' everything (yes, I am a frustrated OC perfectionist) has been 'liberating'. I am, without a doubt, the biggest handicap any of my firearms have.
Keep making those 'satisfying' shots, take some you might not make and learn what she does. Close doesnt always just count in horseshoes......a difficult shot that comes mighty close encourages me to bear down and try harder.
Above all, have fun, and dont sweat the small stuff........in the greater scheme of things, its all small stuff.

I think you are right she is so fun. She is way more than adequate. And it was something I didn't know before the doe went down and she was not "perfect" then, and the snake didn't know the throat was to small when it's head left it's body!!!! She is a real shooter I love her like she is, imperfect and all!!!!!!!!!!

Close may not count in horseshoes but it does count in nuclear warfare!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;-)
