308 Bellm Shorten Barrel or Trade?
« on: January 05, 2004, 08:24:58 AM »
I have shot a Contender Carbine in 308 Bellm for three years. The gun is very accurate. Now my problem! Just for fun I put on a pistol grip and pistol scope. The gun shoots great off sand bags or from a box blind (deer hunting) but is next to impossible to shoot off hand with it's 22 inch barrel. I would like to shorten the barrel and shoot the gun as a pistol only, but what barrel length? What is the ideal length for a Contender? I will shoot the gun off bags or from a box blind. I could keep it as is, shorten the barrel, or sell the barrel and buy a 30-30 in 10 inch or 14 inch length. Sorry for being so long winded. Please help me out.

PS how about them LSU Tigers !!!!

a couple options come to mind. (1) cut it to 16 1/4" so it could be legally used both as pistol or carbine. (2) cut it to 14"-15" for handgun use only.

sorry, i'm not a sports fan. :D  :)

I have found the 14 inch barrels when hunting with bottle neck rounds from a stand ( 10 is better for normal handgun rounds and still hunting)
I have had one 16-1/4 barrel in 22. when I had the shoulder stock on it it made for a very compact and light rifle (not so handy as a handgun) . and the 23 inch barrel i had was just to long and didn't balance well.

If it was my barrel and if i wanted to keep this cal I would trade it off and get a 14 inch 30 cal. barrel and send it off and rechambered.

Well,
Cost you about $50 plus shipping to have SSK shorten your barrel and recrown according to their web site and that's about average. But you could probably make a pretty good trade for it in the barrel trading section. Heck somebody like me might just go out and buy you a 30-30 pistol length just so I could trade you...but it looks like that old Coastie might have beat me to it...dang it Graycg! :(

Why do Coasties have to be 6' tall? So they can walk to shore if their boat sinks...only kidding   :-D

Hello,
LsuFrank, please contact me at graycg@aol.com, I may be able to help you out...and me too!
  Helobill,
I'm only 5'7", had to get a waiver to join Coast Guard...but remember, the only time a Coastie gets into shallow water is when he's climbing into the bathtub with a westpac widow....(Joke!)

Good thing I was always an East Coast Sailor...and now confined in the cornfields!
Let me know if you don't work something out, I'm interested in the barrel too.
