1 inch bore discussion

DD,
Are the balls you are shooting out of your 1" gun Fox balls?  What size are they?
 What was the charge?

The balls I used are cast lead.  They were cast in a brass mould from JT Moulds in the UK.   I had the mould made with full windage and they are suppose to be .987 diameter.  Using wheel weight lead they are .980.

I did not use a sabot. I used a 200 grains of  Goex Fg.

I have used a sabot with 1 inch steel ball from SuperMagnetman.

I may get a larger diameter mould for this gun and try a sabot.

A 1" ball from SuperMagnetman works in a 1" bore?

Let me explain.  I'm trying to figure where to get balls for a 1" Brooks barrel.  Also the load.  Your 200 grains helps.

Smoothbore barrel order a mould form JT Moulds http://www.jt-bullet-moulds.co.uk/ or one inch balls from SuperMagnetMan http://www.supermagnetman.net/

Both are listed on Cannons link list.

I think  Ed at HMR will also make you a mould in steel if you want zinc.

Both JT and Ed can cut you a moulds to spec...Super Magnet man balls are 1.00 and will not fit a 1.00 bore

My bore is not 1 inch even, it is 1.012 inch.  I used a sabot with the 1 inch steel ball.  The sabot is new to  this cannon and I just forgot to to cut some for this shoot.

Here is a link to my set up, http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,178482.0.html

This whole thing is a big issue. If you make a cannon with a1.000 bore you can not shoot 1.000 balls. you must have a ball that is smaller than 1.000

If you want to shoot 1.0 diameter ball you must have a larger bore.

I am in the process of building a cannon with a 1" bore the new owner has borrowed a mold
for a wall gun with a 1" bore that produces a 15/16" ball that should have enough windage for said bore.
Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

Is 1/16" windage too much?  Isn't it supposed to be 1/40th of the bore?  I guess it could be patched.
Whoever said "Determine what you are going to shoot, and then make your gun" knew what they were talking about.

The gunsmiths at Colonial Williamsburg built both the gun and the mold...
I am guessing they feel ok with it.

Having tried it, I would have some real serious thoughts about patching a 1 inch ball.  It isn't easy to seat the ball.

I will have to ask but you are probably right they may be patching the ball.

Ed,
For the moment, I am just trying to enlighten myself.  Seems like $75 is a really good price.

"Do-it" brand "cannon ball" sinker molds work reasonably well, and are fairly cheap.

The 4 cavity 1, 2, 3, 4 ounce mold goes for $39 bucks retail.

The 3 ounce sinker has worked well for me in my 1" Brookes Naval and Dictator bores  (.96 diameter ball).  It is not a super high precision ball, but "adequate" for casual shooting.  For instance, it will have the weight on ounces cast into the ball.

Most of the sinker mould round balls are not round and the few I tried did not fly straight.  If your bore and and ball are to close in size the ball can hang up n the bore.  Becareful.
