Anybody get an Ohio DNR controlled hunt?
« on: August 25, 2011, 08:12:11 AM »
Hi All,

A friend of mine an I both struck out on the controlled hunts, but I have one friend that got Ottawa National Deer Gun, another got Plum Brook Deer Gun and a third friend got the Killdeer Deer Gun Handicap hunt.  I put in for the Ravenna Handicap Deer Hunt but haven't heard anything, this hunt is drawn differently than the other hunts.

I got picked for the Salt Fork State Park Archery Hunt for the entire season.   Does anyone have any info I could use?  It is 3 1/2 hours away for me.   Any idea how they do a partner hunt?  I have been calling the ODNR Wildlife Station  there at the State Park but they must be playing golf.   Has anyone ever been to a controlled hunt?  How do they run one of those hunts?  1st year I have got picked, out of the last 5.  They did make a change this year, which i agree with.  And thats you have to buy your license first.

Zeeks,

I have been to several of the controlled hunts, but never to Salt Fork.  The usual procedure is  you will get an information packet that has all rules for your specific hunt.  All the hunts I have been chosen for I got to select who I brought as a partner.

A friend of mine hunted Salt Fork a few years back and he used a small boat to access areas that are not an easy walk from a parking area.  Also, there is a early season muzzleloader hunt @ Salt Fork in late October so might want to leave the bow at home then. ;)

No luck for me this year, I usually apply for 3-4 every year and havent been drawn for 15 + years.
My grandson drew a early youth hunt at Mosquito Creek a few years ago and we needed waders to get anywhere in the area they gave us to hunt.  We haunted until lunch time without seeing anything
then went back to the office and was able to switch areas but still never seen a deer.
If you get drawn for anywhere that has water I would recomend bringing hip boots or waders, I hunted Revenna once and needed them there also.                       Jed

thanks  for the info.  Drove over there Saturday.  No ODNR was around.  Got to talk to the Park Rangers & park help.  Got a map.  They break down the area into 3 sections.  Sect. A is all season, Sect, B opens Dec. 20, Sect C open s Jan 6.  Nice area.  The couple cleaning the restrooms told me to hunt the Golf Course.  He said every year 2 - 3 big bucks get taken down there.  Heck the only level piece of land there is the Golf Tees.  He also noted not very many people bow hunt there in the wildlife area.  But come muzzleloader & shotgun season its a mad house.   At least I get to hunt the No Hunting Zone Areas.
