Anyone recognize this?
« on: August 25, 2011, 05:44:58 PM »
Bought a surplus sight, I will re-machine the base to use as a ladder sight on a modern rifle.  Just for curiosity, I wondered if anyone recognized it.  I'm thinking some mauser type, maybe an 88?

It's not an 1888 rear sight as that one is mounted on an base that is attached to the barrel jacket. I was kinda sorta thinking a rear sight from one of the early 1891,1893,1895 or 1896 but the screw at the bottom of the tubular collar has me stumped. Check the bottom front of the sight ladder as sometimes it is marked as to the starting distance. Frank

Same here, I looked thru my box of military sights, have about 20 similar to yours except for the screw on the bottom.
none of them had that screw.

Take a shot of the sight leaf as you would see it as if you were using it. Maybe we can id it if any markings or graduations. This one has me stumped. Frank

Might be off a Jap arisaka.  I need to see the face of the sight itself to be sure.
Try to look unimportant.   Your enemy might be low on ammo.

I've made a couple pics of the sight as modified and mounted on my BC.  The markings are graduated from 5 to 24.  I find no maker's marks that I can distinguish.  On the front bottom of the ladder, is marked 23.  On the rear top of the ladder is 44.  Thats all I can distinguish with a loupe and light....

It has made a dandy sight for my 45-70, and while I haven't yet had a chance to shoot it, should give me several hundred yards of elevation.

Ben, pics are too blurry for me to see accurately. Glad to see that it was put to good use. Frank

  Hello mechanic:
Just a guess, maybe a type 38 arisaka, the ladder looks the same but I don't know about the screw. I went out to the smokehouse to look but the bug spray was too strong to take the stock off for confirmation, Tonight was the semi annual bug-spraying night.lol, If you are still curious later and no concrete answers I will be glad to look. Thats about all I do is tinker anyway since I retired.
