Irene should be no big deal
« on: August 26, 2011, 06:13:41 AM »
105mph winds and apparently slowing. That's not bad at all. Whatever gets broken will probably be things that were built too close to the water, or on barrier islands. Power and water will go out for a few days in places. All the land it will hit, except right on the coast is high.

I think the news reporting is reliving Katrina. This is no katrina.

The media always reports sensational news. If it's not that bad they make it bad. Bad news sells the best.... ;)  If a newscaster's mouth is moving, he or she is lying.  ;D  Here in SE Alaska we have 100+ mph winds and nobody considers it out of the ordinary. Small craft stay in port but the ferries keep running.

It's not just the news people in this case, I think the federal government response looks a bit irresponsible now. I guess we'll see some FEMA trailers set up on Martha's Vineyard soon.  ;)

I imagine we'll see pictures of broken beach houses, like we saw when Wilma hit the Florida panhandle in 2005. I know that area, and there's been a boom of building right on the beach. There are some houses that are built with the living quarters at ground level so that any hurricane force storm surge will probably wash the place away. I'm amazed you can get insurance for a place like that.

For North Carolina, I agree as a lifetime NC resident Irene is small compared to others we have seen along our coast.

True some have built too close to the shore line but, this is not New Orleans built below water level with thousands and thousands of folks in the ghetto either to dumb or without the means to leave in front of a cat 3 hurricane.
Irene is at a barely cat 2 level with winds of 100 MPH as of 2:00 PM EST nothing like  Katrina a Cat 5 level 175 MPH  and it made land fall as a Cat 3 storm with winds at 125 MPH in the most vulnerable place in the U. S. the New Orleans area..
2:00 PM EDT Fri Aug 26
Location: 31.2°N 77.5°W
Max sustained: 100 mph

This is to a large degree hyperbole and  a media and goverment over reaction due to the Katrina disaster.
Will check back on Tuesday the 30th of August on the after effects..

We loose our lights here. I have portable generator, and lots of lanterns, and flashlights. A storm cellar is a good investment. Takes the worry out of being close. ;)

Any chance the media might be building this thing up?  :o

I figure we'll find out soon how big a deal it is.
I'm hoping it turns east and the east coast just gets a nice rain.

btw...My brother in law is the Admiral responsible for getting the ships
out of Hampton Roads...They figure it's safer in the big seas and the docks
could get torn up and hinder them from moving ships out after the storm...

I live on a hill also. In fact just a hill over from the highest point between the Red River border, and the Gulf of Mexico. Good locale in the summer, sucks in the winter, and storms.

For the most part a hurricane is like a cocckroach. It's not what he eats up, it's what he messes up.
Now-- don't get me wrong. Hurricanes are dangerous and the tornados they span are wicked.
For the most part it is the tremendous inconveniences, especially the older you are--that create the problems. Water, Electricity--services, heat and rain---no stores, gas short, damage to the house, having to live in a damaged house that my be uninhabitable for a couple of weeks til the insurance gets in order--getting a contractor ( not even a good one---just one that can make the water not come in).
These things a young family can handle---but it will take its toll.
Blessings
TEXAS, by GOD

Should be interesting to what the storm surge will do to the low lying areas of NYC and especially the subway system.

Just heard that some places will get 20 inches of rain in twelve hours.

Ever notice how giddy like the media gets when a hurricane or some disaster hits. Its like oh boy, now we have something to talk about for a couple of weeks.

It's very interesting to study one of these minor hurricanes because of the damage done. First, there's the reporting of deaths attributable to the hurricane. The ones I have found causes for have been:
1) Five kids ejected from a car while they were joy riding during the hurricane without seatbelts. One died.
2) A man died of a heart attack while installing plywood over his windows.
That's not what I think of when I think of deaths actually caused by a hurricane, like the one that killed all those railroad workers in the 1930s. Their shelter was destroyed and they were actually killed by the storm itself.

Then there's the material damage, like Morehead City, NC: A peninsula on the ocean and in the mouth of a tidal river. I'm not at all sympathetic to anyone who built in a place like that and got flooded or damaged. The place would have been flattened in a category 3 or higher.

The concerns in NY are legitimate. They have gotten hurricanes,  but most have not gone over the city directly. They've got a lot of stuff near the water and underground, so flooding of infrastructure is going to be a significant problem. I can understand why they are closing the subway, but I can't understand why the bus lines are shut down.

Most hurricane deaths are due to drowning.

Like I said earlier more hyerbole and media and goverment over reaction.
Of five deaths in NC where the winds were the strongest.
1. Was a heart attack while installing  plywood over  window, which may not be due to the coming hurricane.
3. Were due to folks out riding around in vehicles during a hurricane, how dumb can you get.
1. Was due to a man being our side taking care of his animal during the storm, which is understandable to a degree.
And the wind and flooding damage in NC was minor compared to previous hurricanes.
Official new source:
And yet, it could have been much worse, said the U.S. Coast Guard.

"All in all, the damage wasn't nearly as bad as we had expected," said  Rear Adm. William Lee, who surveyed the coastline on a helicopter tour from Cape  Lookout to Wilmington.  "Very few trees were down. I saw evidence of minor  flooding."Three of North Carolina's deaths involved traffic wrecks during the  storm.  Another person died when he was hit by a tree limb, while feeding  livestock.  A fifth died of a heart attack as he was putting plywood over this  windows ahead of the storm's arrival.
