One very important reason they are laying off fire fighter, is with better building codes there are less fires. Oh yeah the liberal parasites just seem to leave out facts like that.

OK Billy I will give you this one because I don't have any facts to argue your point. But I think they cut the important things to scare us into paying more taxes. There is still enough pork fat in the budgets to power NY City for decades, and they never touch that stuff.

" It is also about their own kids. Both teachers have young children. They wanted more time with their own kids and the extra money certainly doesn't hurt. I was talking with one of the assistant football coaches/teacher and due to heat schedules on practices, etc. his typical day starts at work at 6:00 am and ends at 9 pm".
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Guzzi...  Are you trying to tell us the coach works 15 hours...or are those blue letters above saying something else?  I have worked job where schedules were changed to accomodate heat cycles..sometimes we worked nights instead of days..NO BIG DEAL !  Were you trying to imply that the coach did not get extra pay for extra hours ?  My brother retired as teacher/coach, and he got paid for every hour he worked (and a lot he didn't work).

There is one big, fat "global warming style" lie being perpetrated by teachers and their unions.  That lie is that more money and benefits means better education !  ;D
The FACT is that the reverse is often true. I am here to tell you it is NOT the money, but rather the community, students, parents and teachers! Here in NY State, as an earlier post her shows..2 Pittsford high schools rate in the national "Top 100".  Per student cost in Pittsford is $16,400 !  High enough; but in a state where about 45 miles west lies Buffalo.  Buffalo public schools have an academic rating which scrapes the bottom of the barrel.  Cost per pupil in buffalo is over $25,000 ! ;) :D :o :P

Here is a state by state cost per pupil states ranking:

  http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/07/27/of-all-states-new-york-schools-spend-most-money-per-pupil/

From what I understand, South Dakota and Idaho have comparatively speaking, decent school systems, so lets look at a statement from the cited article:

"After New York, the areas that spent the most per pupil were New Jersey ($15,691) and the District of Columbia ($14,324). States spending the least per pupil were Utah ($5,683), Idaho ($6,625) and Tennessee ($7,113)".

Note; Washington DC spends $14, 324 per  pupil, while South Dakota spends $7, 944 and Idaho spends $6,625.  Do we really believe that Washington DC students are getting twice as good an education ?  Do we really believe that Buffalo.NY students are 3 times better educated than those in S Dakota or Idaho ?

For those who say "more money equals better education", I say "show us the results"!

Quote from Preacherman:
If I wanted more time with I would become a teacher 3 months off in the summer week of Thanksgiving 2 weeks at Christmas 1 week spring break all the state holidays snow days. Hours from 8 inthe morning to 3 in the afternoon. At about 40 to 50 grand a year divide that  by the hours worked, in heated and airconditioned rooms. Poor Teachers. Thats in WV I can't speak for other places.

Ironglow,
I did not put the blue color in, at least I did not intend too. Yes coaches get extra pay. That is one way of making ends meet. This teacher's day is something like this.
5:30am-8:00 - Morning football practice.
8:15-3:30 - In the classroom teaching with a 25 minute lunch.
3:30-4:30 - class prep time
5:00-6 - coaches meeting
6-8 - late practice
8-9 - coaches meeting

Your words..my color on the letters for emphasis.  What was meant by "heat schedules".  If I'm not mistaken..it is simply rearranging the work schedule to avoid the heat of the day.  I did that many times while working on construction..doing prep/assembly work under shade in hotter hours and the full outdoor construction during cooler hours.

Regular practice schedule would be the afternoon practice 4-6 instead of 6-8.

For you liberals, THINK just a minute.  Any government agency, from the Feds to the state and local require TAXES for operation.  You can TAX EVERYTHING all people EARN over $1,000,000 and still NOT have enough money to operate.  TAXES are NOT the problem.  EXCESSIVE UNNESSARY SPENDING is the problem.  Who cares about the sex life of a South American tree sloth.  Cutting out all the stupid unnessary spending is.

Welfare can be cut at least by requiring drug testing to get aid.
Food stamps can be cut by at least 10% by not paying for soft drinks, potato chips, and candy.
Social Security might need to raise the retirement age to cut some costs as people are living longer or privitize it.
ACORN, NPR, and such can be cut out.
Foreign Aid can be cut out.
Farm subsidies for Ethynol production and use can be cut out as well as almost all farm subsities.
Computerization of all Medicare and Medicaid records can save billions.
Allowing Drilling onshore, Alaska, and offshore will provide jobs and cut foreign oil imports cutting the jobless rate by about 1%, and increase taxes coming in.
Get the EPA off the back of industry.  They are shutting down about 10% of the coal power plants resulting in lost coal mining jobs and higher power costs.
Have a flat tax instead of the junk we have now, saving millions by decreasing the size of the IRS.
Switching government vehicles to diesel and CNG will cut about 40% of imported oil thus keeping money here in America to circulate (economics 101) thus creating more tax revenue.
Streamlining the regulations and requiring modular components for nuclear power plants to further cut imported oil.
Encouraging the use of synthetic oil for diesel from coal.
Removing government restrictions on domestically produced products giving favor to imported products.
Putting tarriffs on foreign goods that are government subsidised to put our companies out of business or forcing them to move.

Lots of things can be done WITHOUT actually rasing taxes except the tarriffs to get us back on track.  Lets try them first.  Govenment, especially the feds, have got way too big.

I agree about getting out of unnecessary foreign wars.  We can close down European bases no longer needed, bring the troops home and station them on the border.  Ship illegals home.  No citizenship for kids born to illegals.  Bringing the factories home can create jobs and a tax base, even if it is low wage like textiles.  Feds need to get out of the education business, the welfare business, and turn these over to the states.  Cutting farm subsities, but using the money to buy any excess for storage in bad years would be a wiser investment, especially in the grains.

We have a spending problem, not a tax revenue level problem. Reduce spending then let the politicians debate how to adjust the tax base revenue issues.

Anyone that believes we should reverse the process knows nothing about managing a budget. That’s like saying I refuse to reduce my spending even know my income does not equal my spending. So my goal is to first get a higher paying job then I'll figure out how to reduce my over spending. If you are over spending, STOP NOW! Then figure out how to get a higher paying job. The same concept applies to our government. Only the libs and dems can come up with a convoluted process and the goal is to derail any reduction in spending and simply increases taxes to they can spend yet even more.

As the school year began one of my schools lost two excellent teachers. One of them probably one of the best teachers I have seen in my 22 years in the business and the other a very good teacher. Both left because of less hours and much better pay and benefits. One went to a pharmaceutical company and one to a refinery. The students are the losers.

Sounds like a standard liberal parasite answer to overspending, steal more in the form of taxes. Cowardly parasites you don't even have the ambition or courage to steal for yourself.

TM says;
" DD......for some reason you always fail to mention curtailing spending on the largest line items, which are for he most part unaudited, and that would be defense-war and intell expenditures...and other crazy adventurism".
********************************************************************************
  A little reminder TM;
I find "provide for the common defense" to be an obvious part of the constitution...
On the other hand, I see no social welfare, food stamps, WIC, mortgage bailouts, quotas & set asides, earmarks, pell grants, illegal alien rights or Funding ACORN and ACLU in the constitution.
The constitution does however, speak about "protecting our borders" from aliens trying to sneak in...or smuggle drugs in.
If however, Washington does correct all these expensive, unconstitutional expenditures...and we still can't make ends meet, then we may discuss the constitutional expenditures..but not until then..

   UHH TM;
At one time our threats were guns and bayonets from across the Atlantic...perhaps 2 months away.
Now that we face airplanes with bombs that can reach us in an hour and missles with nuclear warheads, which can reach is in minutes...our role in defense has taken on a different complexion.
     ...Not sure you noticed...

Then you speak of human interaction..perhaps you haven't noticed we have a "state dept", and many other outreach measures, right down to exchange students; perhaps the most effective program.  Some efforts by men have been a flop, e.g. the League of Nations & the United Nations...but we should remember, these are simply efforts by unregenerate man.  Still, the efforts continue.
     ...Not sure you noticed..
---------------------
  Then you make this statement;

" The Constitution also says provide for the common welfare of the people....by the way...healthy, happy, and industrious  people are a component of the common defense of the country...probably the most important component".
----------------------------
You are apparently misconstrueing the term "welfare". Originally, "welfare" meant the nation should do the best it can to provide for the opportunity to "well being" in common, for it's citizens. Look up the term "commonwealth".
There are millions on so-called "social welfare" (a modern term)..receiving unearned funds from the labors of other citizens.  I don't know if you ever partook of this, but I haven't and will not, so long as I can refuse it.

The book Atlas Shrugged deals with this topic very well. Where would this world be without the innovations of the industrialists that these socialist parasites hate so much? Why should a man not be allowed to profit from an invention or innovation which he introduced to the world and made the world a better easier world to live in? Take the railroad barons, where would America have been without them?

Let me tell you folks about a program that can and often does, work very well.  My son and I live next door to each other.  This past school year we each sponsored an exchange student.  My son hosted an 18 yr old girl from Mexico.  She is well to do financially but her family is not involved in government.  The wife and I hosted an 18 yr old girl from a nation on the west coast of South America. ( I'd rather not identify country, for reasons to be made clear.)
These two girls grew to be like sisters, along with my grandaughter. To both of them, my son & his wife were "Dad & Mom", while the wife and I were "Grandpa & Grandma".  A loving relationship developed between all (we are a "hugging" family).
Now they are back home to their respective countries..but they both long to return some day..perhaps for good.
The girl who lived with the wife and I, has a sister and brother-in-law who are on the immediate staff of that nation's president.  Our "little girl" is back home now, studying "International Relations", and she plans on going into government service.
If say, 50 young people with that same aim were to live in caring, loving homes such as ours, and have the positive high school experiences each of "our girls" did..who knows how well that could work for American interests ?
No matter how much BS goes on between national leaders etc..these girls KNOW what Americans are like, and know full well they are thought of in loving remembrance.  We all keep in touch through facebook..even though I don't like the venue.
...but I must admit..to every so often get an "I love you Grandpa & Grandma" from a couple sweet little girls in Mexico & South America..sure cheers this old man's heart..

Personally, I believe that such an experience with youth of such potential, can do more good for the US.. than anything all the self-seeking "diplomats" can do.

IG, love that narrative.  my wife and I hosted a girl from Holland back in 86/87 school year and it was a great experience.  that gave us a good excuse to go to holland where we found that they are 100 years behind us.
anyway, she went thru the senior year in high school and made straight A's without cracking a book.
she had learned it all in elementary school.
teachers here have got it made, due to our lax educational system.  but as long as we have unions and a class of people who yell racism nothing will change.

Are you claiming that unions as well as their members, irregardless of their profession(s) are racist?

I hope I read and interpreted your post incorrectly.

You should thank the big spenders and unions that have run a corrupt state for years, robbing the tax payers and setting the stage for a final financial disaster.

The tax payers money is not just there for the state workers and politicians to spend as they please, endlessly. It eventually runs out and then the workers still in the system get to pay for the abuse of their predecessors. That time has now come. Thank your former co-workers, Unions and the politicians that supported and funded their unreasonable demands.

Bugeye,

Doug, nope, I was refering to teachers.  most teachers with nothing but a bachelors degree could not hack it in a european school and the people yelling racism are blacks etc. who don't allow whiteys to disipline their kids.
I stated that Holland was 100 years behind us and that was in consumer products.  we are way behind them in education, especially in engineering.
hope this clears it up, I tend to ramble.

edited to add.  I believe that teaching should be a high paying job,  but only if the teacher is qualified and has at least a masters degree.  those with a bachelor degree could work in a sort of assistant position while they worked on their masters.   also the administrators should have the power to expel students who disrupt class.  after I retired from Delta airlines I drove a school bus for several years and mentored 2 different little boys and I can tell you that our education system is going down the drain because of blacks and others who are too lazy to get an education and work for a living. they want it handed too them starting in kindergarten.  my wife is a school bookkeeper and she comes home every day with new horror stories about parents and their out of control kids.

Teachers should compete by results for promotions, just as those in private industry do. That way the "cream rises to the top" and the better ones can be kept and the useless sloughed off.
When unions come in with their artificial standards, primarily hinging upon a non-quality standard such as "seniority", it destroys the whole weeding out process.  With union standards, both the "cream" and the "crap" can rise to the top.  If I were a teacher and a good one, I would resent any lazy incompetents being promoted ahead of myself.
This whole system PROVES it's not "for the children"; but obviously for the teachers, good, bad or indifferent.

IG, I agree with you, now the teachers are having to deal with disipline instead of teaching.
my county is the poster child for how to destroy a school system. when they lost acreditation because of the black school board the whites left in droves. my house has lost $100,000 in value because of them.
I'm stuck here with no answers.

They could have went to Wisconsin. We are hiring teachers in many school districts. Why ? How can this be? Scott the monster Walker ? This is why. The teachers union owned its own heath insurance company. With " collective bargaining rights the union made it law the state had to go through the union owned insurance company. Many knew this was true but few knew how badly they over charged because they had no competition, so the price went up. Now school districts can buy their insurance anywhere they want. As a comparison the exact  policy compared to WEACK  is at least 30 % cheaper. For a single male the policy was 76% higher than what was offered by private insurance companies. Now districts are saving huge chunks of money on health insurance. Some, Like one I think was Appleton district is saving 1 million dollars a year. Many a half million a year. This savings does not include what the teachers are kicking in to help. All these years these same liberals have snarled at high profits from insurance companies but never said a word about their own company totally ripping off the tax payers.

Wisconsin teachers were getting overcharged for health insurance..by a huge amount.  Naturally, they had to 'make up' the difference in their take home pay..so they kept demanding more taxes laid upon the citizens.
It looks like that huge overcharge was going into Dem campaign coffers..and Walker, concerned for the taxpayers, put a stop to their gravy train !  That's why they trucked in thugs from all over the country, trying to intimidate the will of the people !
God Bless Scott Walker..all states need more like him !

My son left $40000 in the airo space machine industry against my wifes objections. Since then he has lost his house, the second car, and has taken a pay cut every year for the four years he has taught. He has to pay to further his education on his own. His family insurance has gone up every year. He now can qualify for food assistance. All those VACATION days are not payed and he cant afford to even do anything on those days off anymore. His pay is based on days worked. He can collect it in equal checks for the school year or calender year. The same amount , just how he collects. He is thinking about 2 more years and he wont have anything left but to vote democrat and collect welfare. As for joining the union, its the cheapest way to have a lawyer on retainer. These days every teacher is worried about one bad accusation and where that goes.

       Doug;
You and the socialist lemmings are spitting into the wind ! Did you notice what Ohio did also ?  Presently, the move is toward freedom..as opposed to the move toward socialism in 2008.
Are you going to stick around for the Obama recall election next year ? ;)   :D   ;D

BW56, I think there's more to this story that you're not telling.  I would guess that over half of our friends are teachers and none have those problems.
