Range Time

Spent about two hours making smelly smoke this afternoon.  It was great, made more so in that I had the place to myself for the entire time.  I was working with two Thompson rifles:  the old .50 Renegade I assembled 30 years ago while I was in seminary and a newly acquired (and really like new) factory made Hawken in .54.  I picked up the .54 to use as a round ball gun, and it's showing some potential, though I'm convinced it can do better.


My last three shots with the .54 all cut the 10 ring, albeit at three different corners (about a 2" group).  I was using Hornady .530 balls,  80 gr. FF Goex, a .54 Wonder Wad over the powder and Wally World 10 oz. denim lubed with a "Mule Milk" recipe I found on this site.  So far, this is the best performing combo for the .54.  I tried some CVA pre-lubed patches which both of my rifles clearly hate.  Patches from the .54 are still showing slight signs of cutting from the lands.  Frankly, this rifle has been shot very, very little and the barrel needs to break in.  Maybe I should give it the J.B. Bore Paste treatment?  In any case, it's at least performing predictably and with plenty of accuracy to fill a tag or two this year.


My faithful old .50 Renegade was grouping a bit more than 2" @ 50 yards with 370 Maxis (which I cast) lubed with the lastest Thompson wonderlube and 90 gr. FF Goex.  I actually got a better group last time with the older "Bore Butter", but, like it's bigger bore stable mate, it's grouping predictably.  (Some of you may remember I "fire lapped" this barrel several weeks ago.


While I could certainly fine tune each of these rifles, they're shooting to point of aim with predictable results.  It would appear that any misses this Fall can be laid at the feet of the "jerk behind the trigger".  My hands smell of a mixture of minty lube, essence of Murphy's Oil Soap/Alcohol/Water mix and genuinely stinky black powder fouling.  All's right with the world!

That is awesome to read there, PeterCartwright. I have to agree; once you get that sulfur smell from a smoke pole in your lungs, there's no turning back.  8)
 
I was out for a few hours last weekend sighting in a muzzle loader that I bought last year. I almost  embarrassed that it has taken me so long to get round to sighting-in...Its relaxing and there's nothing better than tinkering with a new firearm.
 
Its a flintchlock, and I've found that I've just spent a little to many years stuffing primer caps onto nipples; still, I had a lot of fun. I figure a few more times at the range and I'll have it pretty well hitting where I want it too. Then its off to the squirrel woods.

I only own one flinter, a Pre-Revolutionary Lancaster pattern gun I built 20 years ago.  Haven't shot it in a while.  I'd change some of the design if I built another.  The Green River barrel is 15/16" in .50.  That means, the 42" tube helps the rifle weigh in at about 10 lbs.  Wish I'd have built a .54 instead.  The traditional design also means it's a lot more hassle to clean than the hooked breech guns. 


I shot one deer with the gun.  Works very well if you can find a hidy-hole big enough to handle the gun.  :)  Maybe I need to dirty it up again as well.  Anyway, good luck on your squirrel hunting.

I love those old traditional guns, but they definately aren't as nice to take a part and break down as a good hooked breach. But I must confess that I hate boiling water and scrubbling bores.
 
Hope you don't mind if I share with you what I do to clean my guns?
 
I started shooting smoke poles when I was about 14.....about thirty years ago, when I was 18 or so, I got into a group of oldtimers that taught me a waterless system to clean my front-loaders. They showed me how to make a simple cleaning solvent that I use to wipe out the bore when I'm done shooting...then I use an old military gun oil designed for the old corrsive powders to clean the gun and wipe the outside of my guns.
 

 
This WWII surplus oil works great on corrosive powders, its just amazing stuff. Its not easy to find...so I bought a case that last time I came across it.
 
I clean the nipples, flashcup, lock, and wipe down the stock with this stuff after I've scrubbed out the bore. Run a clean patch down the bore a few months later...and it comes out clean every time.
 
I even use this oil to season the barrels on a new gun...

Certainly not!  Thanks for sharing.  I've been into the non-petroleum barrel treatment for a while now.  Seems to work for me.

Drove out to my range last night to get a little shooting in with my .45 flinter. Buried the truck up to the axles in soft muddy earth...I must have slept through 'ell of a rain storm on Tuesday night.
 
Looks like I'll have to wait till after Dove Hunting this weekend to take 'er out again.
 
I hope the Dove Hunting is good this year.  8)

Got home late last night from a wonderful opening weekend dove hunt in Eastern Colorado. And this morning I took two of my rifles out to my range to do some shooting.
 
This is my .50 calibre Blue Ridge Percussion.
 

 
The range is 40 yards. You can see the final group at the bullseye, that I shot from a rest. The group at the top of the target was shot off-hand. It looks like I tend to pull my shots high and to the right. So my final shot I held low and a little left, it hit pretty near center in the taped off zone. Nothing like good 'ole Kentucky Windage... 8)
 
Such a great way to start off a day.

This is my second gun that I shot this morning. Its a .32 Calibre Blue Ridge Rifle...again its a percussion. I've had this gun a lot longer than the .50 calibre in the previous picture. Its deveoped a nice patina over the years.  8)
 

 
Again, the group at the bullseye is my final group from the bench. The group at the top of the target was shot off-hand. It seems that I consistantly pull my shots high and to the right. I'll have to work on that issue.
 
The Ft Lupton Trapper Days Cellibration is this next weekend, and looks like I'll be able to shoot in the big bore and the small bore competitions. I'll hit the range a few more times this week in the evenings, and work on my off-hand shooting.

Heck streak....I'm just happy to be on paper. Shootin at that little black circle at 40 yards with open sites, I just average the blur and try to hit the middle.  ;D
 
Broke out my F&I gear, getting ready for the Rondy this next weekend and my Gaiters don't fit any more. I must have had a very well nurished summer.  :o

Somebody at some point was asking about load data for a T/C Smooth bore in .56 calibre. I cannot find the thread, and I like this thread, so here is what I came across today.
 
 
Renagade, 56 caliber smoothore
Powder Round ball loads (.550", 265 grains):
80 FFg 1195 FPS   -   840 ft/lbs
90 FFg 1285 FPS   -   972 ft/lbs
100 FFg 1300 FPS   -   992 ft/lbs

I hope that this helps  the GBO'er that was looking for this informaion.

I got that itch, so its time to hit the range and do some shooting. I was out in Yuma hunting Doves last weekend and now its time break out the Blackpowder again.
 
I just need to decide which one to shoot.
 
I have a sweet little Southern Kentucky Poorboy made by TVM...that I'm just dying to take back out to the range, but I was having a few accuracy problems and its now back at TVM.
 
Maybe I'll break out the Brown Bess carbine and do some smooth-bore actin this weekend. Nothing like punching papaer with an ounce of lead.
 
Whatever I shoot, I'm needing that Sulfur Fix.  8)

I shot my Pedersoli Alamo Rifle in .50 calibre. My soon to be son-in-law sighted in his .300 Win Mag before switching over to my CVA Mountain Rifle, also a .50 calibre. We had a great time shooting at gongs and punching paper.
 
The Alamo Rifle has a very sleek cherry wood stock and is a very accurate gun. I've used it for many years to take both deer and many elk. But the stock of the Alamo Rifle is just so dang narrow that I might as well be putting a knife blade against me as I shoot, even when just shooting target loads (Hunting Loads are just plain brutal). I'll have a slick bruise in the morning.
 
I must say though that any day on the range is a good day.  8)

I got my .45 calibre Southern Kentucky poorboy back from TVM bout a week ago. The rifle had deveopled some accuracy problems and they wanted the rifle in the shop to figure out the problems and fix them. Their customer service is just awesome.

For about the last few weeks I've been kinda laid up due to an emergancy surgurey on October 3rd, but I so need to go out and do some shooting. I'm thinking that maybe if I'm doing better by this weekend I'll slip out and shoot my .45...its such a sweet shooting little gun, the recoil should be nice and easy on me.

I need to get out and do some shooting...this recovery garbage sucks eggs.  ???

Keep in mind any weight restrictions the doc has you on, some of the long barreled guns get heavy when ya shoulder 'em.

Hope you heal up fast, I was down for 5 weeks in the early spring with a back issue, hope you aren't down that long.

Until Thanksgiving, my weight limit is 25 lbs....And I know immediately when I go over that limit.  :o

I know what you are saying. This fact was a real turn off for me regarding more traditional designs as opposed to hooked breech guns at first. I put together a "take down" kit for mine. A flat head screw driver and a finishing nail ground down to use as a punch for the barrel pins. I take the barrel out of mine after every session and just stick the barrel in a bucket of soapy water and flush it out. It takes a little longer to clean than a hooked breech but I dont think its too bad.
 
When I first got my TVM I did the waterless cleaning the first few times out but I got paranoid about the cleaning solution getting between the barrel and the stock.

I hit the range today with my Dad. He called me on the phone and it was a last minute thing. It was good the shoot the .45 Flinter again, such a smooth shootin firearm. The shooting was at 50 yards and there was a lot of wind with some pretty good gusts, so groups weren't anything to write home about. That long barrel on my TVM Southern Kentucky was like a sail and seemed to catch every gust and swirl.
 
My Dad bought a TC Seneca on GunBroker a while back and he took it out and sighted it in with only two shots...that was fun. I even fired a respectable 4 shot group that wasn't the tightest, but it was nice considering the windy conditions. I have to say that those little carbines are a lot easier to keep on target on a windy day.
 
We shot for about an hour or so. As the sun set behind the Rockies, we came back to my house and cleaned the guns and swapped stories. My wife had made a great dinner with the leftovers from Turkey Day. It was good to be at the range today, I needed it.

Went to the range last weekend. My Dad brought out 2 new (to Him) rifles. Both are the Lyman Great PLains Rifle. One is a .50 calibre the other is a .54 calibre.
 
The .50 calibre took maybe an hour to get it shooting accurately and consistantly. He played with different loads and patchings, but I think he's pretty close to having a real shooter with that gun. His final groups were 2 inches at 57 yards (range finder) for one and 1 3/4 at the same distance for the other. All shooting was from a rest (Lead Sled). A few more times out and I think he'll have quite an impressive rifle.
 
The .54 was on the money from the get go; and wow did that gun shoot....Blamo. It shot clover leafs and puppy toes at 57 yards. Dang...where does he get so lucky?
 
I'm enjoying my Southern Kentucky Flintlock that I got awhile back from TVM. Dang fine rifle... 8)
