M28 in my local pawnshop--90%--6 inch barrel---$500.
I didn't buy it.

Okay, first, get a good nights sleep.  Then when you wake up, a cup of starter fluid of your choice.  Next (after you get dressed), casually go to the pawn shop and make an offer.  Dicker a bit and settle on a price.  You will feel better about it.

Thinkin a bit high for a M28. Now granted, I bought mine new in 1974 for $120.00,but even with inflation I'm thinkin a little high.

I have a M28 4 incher  an old DPS revolver lots of holster wear  she's lewd cure and socially unacceptable (but todays gotta be a double stack auto crowd) It's my go to hand gun I love it

I stopped in a pawn shop last week to browse and see if anything grabbed me. They had a bunch of guns , and they had 2 model 28s and a 27 used in VG condition. I had to have the 6" pinned and recessed 28 it was 443 tax and all. It has the sweetest action I have ever felt in a revolver.  I haven't had the chance to shoot it but will soon.

My school of thought is, "Never pass on a Model 28". They were an icon of the working man's gun and also a great shooter, to me, a great deer killer. If I ever come across one, even in decent shape and funds allow, I will buy it. For principal if anything........

Okay, I'll kick open this can of worms.  When I was a bit younger, I used the 357 Magnum in a few revolvers.  I came to realize, most of my shooting in the .357 caliber was done with 38 Specials and when I went hunting a larger caliber revolver accompanied me.  I just did a mental inventory and have only two 357 Magnums, a 6" M27-2 and a 6" M686.  When the 686 goes to the range , I mostly uses 38 Special in it.  (The M27-2 is waiting for the right time and place when a 4" M25-5 shows up and the owner needs a 357 more than a 45 long Colt.)  I have four 38 Specials.  So I quess I am one, perhaps the only one, who doesn't need a 357.  I am beginning to more and more appreciate a heavy bullet and moderate velocities and minimum recoil gets things done.

fair enough but since the 357M shoots 38's and is in most cases a stronger gun .......

And usually a heavier revolver than needed for the 38 Special cartridge.  I find the K frame M15 or M14 is about perfect.

 I hadn't noticed much difference in like guns really say a S&W 64 vs 66. but heres something , a J frame 38 conc. hammer is 14-13 ozs while the same gun in 357m is 12.

I had one follow me home earlier this year.  It's a 4" pre-model 28 with just a hint of holster wear - I believe it is from 1954 and it displays the 5-screws some of us love.  Says "highway patrolman" on the barrel too.  I don't think the gun's sideplate was ever removed either.  Some very old, dried grease was carefully massaged away to show basically a new gun on the inside - the outside is exceptional and very clean.  This gun did not see "active duty."  Only thing it didn't have was the correct grips; it came with new style magnas.  Easy fix though.

110 grain jacketed hollow point, driven by 15 grains of 2400. Runs about 1550 feet per second.  Powerful with quite moderate recoil. Accurate, if its in your sights you will hit.
