2011 Colorado Dove Hunt
« on: August 26, 2011, 03:21:27 PM »
The 2011 Dove season is just around the corner here in Colorado. Next weekend, I'll be with my son on the plains of eastern Colorado enjoying the company of family and hunting doves for a few days.

Who else out there is looking forward to another fine dove season opener?...and what part of this great nation will you be hunting in?

Alabama...
I can't wait.
Got a new Benelli last year, and didn't get to shoot it enough that its past the honeymoon.

Sept 9 - Pay hunt with business associates. Always a great shoot.
Sept 10 - shoot over a corn field at a friends farm with a bunch of buddies from church.
Sept 21 - another pay hunt at the previous place with business associates.
All of these are 2 hours each way.

Opening weekend and other available weekends, I am going to try my decoys and mojo on our deer lease.
I have been out there recently trying to calling coyotes and have seen a few.
Nice thing is that its close enough to go after work or before church.
If I shoot a few I will just cook them that night.

The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

I had hopes for last year that did not pan out well, but hope springs eternal. I am in southern Missouri and our season opens next Wednesday. I have my bucket, some decoys, the camo out, and some 20 and 28 gauge ammo. There are a lot more local birds than last year. I have a few marginal areas on my own place, but I am scrambling to locate some grain/ bean fields around. I am happy to see the interest here, seems everyone focus' on deer. I hunt them for the freezer, but I love bird hunting the most.

You guys all sound like you're going to have a good time.

Very cool. 8)

I was at Baseball Practise for my son's Fall Ball Team, and one of the dad's was telling me about where he's going to hunt this year...a place down along the South Platte River that he calls "Little Argentina"....that gave me a chuckle.  ;)

Started pulling all the gear out and getting it ready for this weekend. I'll be shooting my Ruger Red Label, and my son likes his over/under Baikal (?) 12 gauge. Spoke to my cousins the other day, they are coming home from the Colorado State Fair early this week.

I'll be out there for the evening hunt on Friday, hunt through the weekend and return Sunday evening. I'll take lots of pictures, its such a good time hunting with family.  8)

Weather reports are AWESOME for this weekend. After a record hot August here in Colorado, its looks like the highs will be in the mid-70s this weekend. Nice hunting weather...

I'll pick my son up from Football Practice, load the gear in the truck and we should arrive by 7:00pm. I called last night, and a nice home made dinner will be waiting for us when we arrive. I so enjoy these family hunts.

Got in late last night.

Its was a great time. We had the usual crew out hunting, and my shoulder is a little sore from all the shooting over 2 solid days of shooting. We arrived earlier than expected, so there was time for an evening hunt on Friday; then we hit it early Saturday, and Sunday for a full weekend of amazing hunting. We had great hunting conditions as the weather was in the upper 70's lower 80's the whole time. Lots of shooting & good conversation, quality time spent family and friends.

I've never seen so many Eurasion Doves, & to my chagrin they are much easier to hit than a morning dove. The Morning Dove is like an X-Wing Tie Fighter...zipping and diving through the trees and tumbling in mid-air as  shots are fired; while the Eurasion is more a C-14 Cargo Plane that lumbers along in a predictable flight path, even as shots are fired.

We had an amazing BBQ after the hunt on Sunday. Right now I need to mow the lawn and take a nap...I have a family picnic at my Dad's later today.

I hope that your Dove Opener was awesome...and post your stories.  8)

My dove hunt would have been a bust, except it turned into the best crow shoot I ever had.
Only saw one dove within shooting range; it was in a tree right above me but I had set my gun down.
Had a Foxpro electronic caller in the car.  Saw some crows flying around, so I hit "crow fight".  They came in one at a time.  If Eurasians are C-14's, crows are blimps.  I missed one, but got all the rest.  Shot 7 on Saturday afternoon and 2 on Sunday morning. Good batting practice for next weekend.
Sounded like a war to south and east of me.  Somebody had a goood field.
We will have cooler weather and good fields to shoot next weekend.

Here's some of our intrep hunters on Saturday morning. We dropped off a few hunters at the far end of this wood lot, then the group hunted through and pushed the doves ahead of us as we hunted.

I always intend to take photos of our hunts, but once the shooting gets started, that plan quickly gets lost. This year I only took a few photos.

The land is quite dry in eastern Colorado and stock tanks are always good places to look for good numbers of doves. Most of these doves are Eurasians. Its always awesome having family with lots of land in the area. There were pieces of land, that we just flat ran out of time and never got too.

It doesn't take long for the doves to figure out that an approaching auto is bad news and that once the auto leaves, all is clear. So after we'd hit a stock tank once or twice, we'd leave a small group of hunters and then drive away. The group left behind would get some great pass shooting about 15 minutes or so after the truck pulled out.

Well the season opener of the 2011 Dove hunt is over for me. I had a great time spending qaulity time with family and friends. I hope that you and yours had as great a time as well.

Post photos of your hunts, if you got 'em. I'd really enjoy seeing and reading about what others are doing.  8)

Hey PowPow...I've always wanted to hunt crows. I've never done that before, I'll have to try that this winter. Thank you for the idea.

Very nice.  8)

Got a phone call tonight from Yuma....seems that Dove hunting has gotten better since opening weekend. The birds are skittish since the opener, but there are just so many that we're headed back this weekend.

Due to the kid's activity schedules, we'll head out at 5:00 am and be there to start hunting  at about 7:00 or so. Hunt a all day Saturday...morning hunt on Sunday and then head home for a Sunday night Fall Baseball game.

I'm a little jazzed to say the least.  8)

Well its finally here....IT's FRIDAY. I've packed my gear and gassed the truck.

We're leaving early early in the morning and heading out for a day long hunt. It looks like we won't be staying over and hunting for 2 days as planned, so I'll be back late tomorrow night making for a 1 day hunting trip.

The weather has been fairly cold this last week and that typically spells "doom" to the dove hunter in our area. But word is that there should be good hunting again for this weekend.  8)
