Large ring Mauser Barrel on a 700 rem. action
« on: August 27, 2011, 09:31:50 AM »
I have a rem.700 action, and a gentleman offered me a large ring mauser barrel at a great price. So my question is can that bbl be fitted on the 700 action with out major work? He says he'd heard of rem bbls being installed on mauser actions, so why not vise versa?.....Thanks for any help on this one

A large ring mauser uses a barrel thread diameter of 1.1 inches by 12 threads per inch, the M700 uses a 1 1/16 diameter by 16 threads per inch barrel. The Remington also uses a counterbore for the head of the bolt to complete the 3 rings of steel... It might be possible to use a Remington barrel in a small ring mauser (threaded .980 inch X 12 TPI) and it may be possible to use a Mauser barrel on a M700 action but there will still need to be quite a bit of machine work done.. It costs as much to instll a new barrel as a used one and the quality of the new one is known.

New Remington "take off" barrels are cheap and easy to install.  You'll find them at just about any gunshow for $25 to $50 and they'll also fit the Remington stocks.
