New/old .357 Max purchase

I bought a used .357 Max yesterday with a stubbed stainless 25 inch 1-20 twist bull barrel on a 058 receiver.  i am going to have the barrel cut down, any recommendations regarding length?  Also, I choose not to buy the plastic thumbhole stock that came with it.  I want to but a replacement wood stock, perhaps a BC classic or another straight grip buttstock.  Will any of the current or past wooden stocks including the BC fit the 058 receiver?  In addition, do you think the 1-20 twist will stabilize wadcutters out to 50 yards (grandchildren)?  Thanks

Robert,
  I know that rifle! ;)  Any of the current stocks will fit it just fine and I'm sure that it will shoot the wadcutters or any number of lightweight cast plinking loads just fine for the purpose at hand. Remember that it will also shoot any of the .38 Spec or .357 Mag ammo. Just be sure to clean the crud ring out of the chamber before firing any .357 Max loads. As far as a barrel length, I would stick to something in the 18"-20" area due to the high velocity ranges of the lighter bullets that rifle is capable of shooting so well.

The bearing surface of a 140g + - grain FWC is likely greater than that of a 180g  jacketed slug!
1;20 is slow really slow for this caliber... Shoot it and see what you get... I would say your likely to find the lightest bullets shot the best... Maybe even something as light as the 80G bullets orig. made for the 380 ACP!!!

  What about the .002-.003" difference in bullet diameter between the .355"/.356" and .358" bullets? Would the bullet expand slightly at higher pressures and velocities?

Yea the bullet is small, but the 9MM and 380 bullets can shoot just fine.
Years ago I have a great shooting load with a 90G 9mm bullet. It was really moving and blew up just like a varmint bullet in the couple woodchucks I shot with it!!

The gentleman selling the .357 Max, and I do mean gentleman called with you a small issue he had discovered with the gun and offered to let me out of the deal if I was not comfortable.  Probably should have stayed in but I am all thumbs when it comes to tweeking guns and decided I should take him up on his offer.  Thanks for all the good info though.
