Ruger grips
« on: August 28, 2011, 03:15:22 AM »
Do the New Vaquero, Anniversary .357; and the Lipsey .44 spc (2009/2011) share the same grip frame?
Thanks in advance,
Hugh D

Someone who knows more about Ruger's than me should reply to this but it is my understanding that ALL Bisley grips are the same. So far as I can tell from feel my Lipsey's Bisley .44 Special a 5.5" one has the standard Bisley grip same as other Bisley's I've owned.

Yes, the steel, lock equipped "XR-3".  I'm using an inaccurate part number, however.  The original XR-3 was made from cast aluminum whereas the "current" New Model "XR-3" is investment cast steel or stainless steel.

Will the original XR-3 grips (three screw?) fit the new grip frame? Also, where do the XR-3 Red. grips fit into this? Thanks...

My new BH .45 Colt has the lock as shown in photo above but it is not steel it is aluminum.

Looking in the owner's manual at the parts list it seems there are a bunch of different grips at least they show them as such but it says ALL Bisley grip frames are the same item #BR00300.

It shows KXR00300 for BH and SBH stainless guns.
It shows XR00301 for SBH blued guns.
It shows MR00300 for SBH 7.5" and 10.5" blued guns.
It shows KMR00300 for SBH 7.5" and 10.5" stainless guns.
It shows KHR00300 for all Hunter models.

Need to separate "Grip" and "Grip Frame."

Outside of the bearcat pretty much all Ruger single action Ruger grip frames will screw all single action Rugers.  A complicating factor is that the most recent new Model Rugers have eliminated the two appendages that extend into the back of the cylinder frame cylinder frame.  In the late 80s/early 90s a change was made in the length of the grip frame ears that screw to the cylinder frame beside the hammer.  Watch out for this when buying used frames that have been fitted to other guns.  Doesn't matter with new grip frames since they are oversize in this area.

So far as Grips your will see the XR3, XR3-Red, Bisley, and birdshead.  A shorter XR3-Red is seen on some of the Single Sixes.  Additionally the new Models that come with the lock require addition clearance inside the grip panels to clear the lock.  There is a wonderful description and diagram of the grip frame variations over on GunBlast...  http://www.gunblast.com/Hamm_Ruger-SA-GripFrames.htm

The 'XR3-red grips are a little longer in the nose.  When Ruger went to those grips and grip frames, all the full sized guns were fitted with them.  (except the bird's head, and SBH of course)  When Ruger came out with the 'New' Vaquero, they went back to the original size grip frame, with the grips hollowed out in the back to clear the lock mechanism.  The XR3-red grips are a little longer in the nose, about a 1/10 of an inch.  That pushed the grip back a little more from the trigger guard to protect your middle finger from the recoil.  I like the new 'smaller' grip frames, but I do get 'whacked' more often with the trigger guard with full loads.  So you have the XR3 (colt style grips), then the XR3-red with the longer length horizontally, now back to the XR3 shape but with the depression to clear the lock.  I have shortened two pair of stags from XR3 red, to fit the new XR3's and hollowed out the clearance.  Those same pair of grips are now on my Colt SAA.  44 Man

These are all the same two pair of grips made for the XR3-red.

On the XR3-red first

Then shortened and on a new XR3

Then on another 'New' Vaquero

Then on a pair of Gaucho's with a little more fitting.

Finally on the Colt SAA.  All the same two sets of grips!
