Good question ??  I sure hope that someday soon the rules makers compare whats legal now to what difference centerfire pistol calibers would make.
I think if they let us use rifles .357 and larger and case length of 1.6" or less would be no more hazzardous than a 50 cal. MZ shooting a pistol bullet at 2300 or shotgun slugs at 2000 or  TC contender shooting a 45-70 ?
There main concern is reduce deer populations safely and there is probably less than 10 % of the total deer hunters that would change what thet hunt with now. But I beleive that the few of us that would go to a rifle of within limits are, more avid and better shooters, take deer hunting with more passion than the guys who once a year shoot a few slugs at a paper plate and go hunting.
Not putting the casual types down but the state wants us to kill more deer and in my opinion should try a limited rifle gun season and see how it goes.                Jedman

I have a Puma .357 mag and a Uberti .45 Colt 1860 Henry. I would love to take one out for deer.
Hi NSA! Can you see how many fingers I am holding up?

From what I have heard, the state is considering the use of long guns shooting pistol cartridges.  As to when this will take effect if ever is anybody's guess.  As to keeping the deer population under control, I again will try to do my part.

There was a day when I thought they would never legalize pistols in Ohio.   Way back when doe tags came by lottery.   Look how far we have come.   There's still hope I guess..

Home » Content        Ohio Division of Wildlife considers opening deer hunting to certain center-fire rifles printable page  Submitted by cbaus on Wed, 10/12/2011 - 07:00. Outdoor writer Jeffrey L. Frischkorn recently publicized discussions at the Ohio Division of Wildlife to open deer hunting to firearms other than certain handguns, shotguns and muzzle-loading rifles.
From the article:

As for the future of deer management in Ohio, that is a subject under review, said
[Mike Tonkovich, the Ohio Division of Wildlife's deer management administrator].
The biologist is in the process of sending out a random survey of all licensed Ohio hunters. One of the questions being asked is whether hunters would support an antlerless-only muzzle-loading season in October.
Also being explored is whether to liberalize the regulations more by allowing certain types of rifles for use in deer hunting during the firearms hunting season.
A potential problem with such a change would be a hunter would simply switch from using a shotgun to a rifle, rather than drawing in new hunting recruits.
"There are good arguments on both sides of this issue, and I'm happy we are discussing this topic," Tonkovich said. "We have an obligation to go to the table. That's progress, frankly." Buckeye Firearms Association leaders Larry Moore, Aaron Kirkingburg, and "Buckeye" Dan Allen have been participating in discussions on this issue with the Division of Wildlife for some time now. Following is the proposal submitted by BFA:
Rifle Hunting Proposal for Ohio

  • Any cartridge currently legal to hunt with in a handgun, would be legal in a rifle. No complex or confusing regulations or list of “rifle only” cartridges. The parameters for handgun cartridges would be kept exactly as they are, so there will be no additional “layer” of regulation specific to rifles.
  • Black powder cartridge rifles would be legal during regular gun season. Not to be confused with muzzle loaders, and no inclusion in any of the primitive weapon seasons.  Caliber requirements remain the same as pistols in that anything .357 or larger in a black powder cartridge would be legal.
  • Compliance for 3 shot rule using dummy rounds, or similar "simple" fix. Find a system of compliance for the three shot rule that does not require costly permanent, or semi permanent modifications to the firearm.
  • Sunset provision giving DNR an "out" in 4-6 years if unforeseen problems result. Include a time frame for the "trial period" in which a field assessment of the new regulations can take place. Thus giving the Division of Wildlife, and the Wildlife Council an intact system for returning things to the way they were. Include parameters for allowing the regulation to sunset vs. become law.
  • Make these changes effective state wide if possible. At least the pistol caliber cartridges should be state wide. If any "zoning" is to occur, limit the black powder cartridges to "foothill" counties. Leaving Glaciated Ohio, or "the flatland" counties closed to the use of black powder cartridges.

that looks like real progress to me. I would love to use 357 or 44 straight walled cartridges in rifle configuration. Joe

eyeshot,   If the Rifle Hunting Proposal for Ohio was enacted as writtin in the first line,
Any cartridge currently legal to hunt with in a handgun, would be legal in a rifle.
That would include rounds such as the 444 Marlin and 45-70 Gov. because they are legal right now if you had a handgun with a min. 5" bbl chambered in one of these.
The Ohio law defines strait walled as any cartridge without a bottlenck shape, Strait walled can be tapered from base to mouth such as the 444 & 45-70.                   Jed

I really like the prospect of an antlerless muzzleloader season in October.

Imagine... deer hunting with a flintlock on a nice crisp October day as opposed to...deer hunting with a flintlock on a frigid January day and not having to enter a drawing and drive halfway across the state to do it!
