New to me Mosins.
« on: August 29, 2011, 06:01:16 AM »
I posted in another thread about my recent purchase of a 1938 91/30 and that I wanted to add a few more of these rifles to my collection as I was so impressed by them and their history.

I wasn't planing on adding 2 more at this time, I was looking to buy just one for now, but you know how things kind of work out sometimes when a deal comes along that you just can't say no to.

I just made the deal on 2 more, one is a 1932 hex receiver Tula 91/30 and the other is a 1945 M-44, both have all matching serials, no forced or electro penciled and both are about as pristine as they come.
Purchasing both from the same collector, I will be paying for and getting them next weekend and will do a further report on them then with more/better pics!

Heres a couple of pics of them for now.

And so I can keep them all on the same page, hers a couple of the 1938 91/30 that I had bought the other day.

Thanks for looking!
Ken.

I would like to see your face the first time you shoot that M-44. In bright sun light you will see a FIRE BALL about the size of a basket ball or larger. I have one that is super accurate though. It has been sighted with the bayonet extended. With out being extended it will shoot to the left quite a bit. You will have to tap the front sight to the left toward where it is shooting to get your sight alignment. It will look like you are almost removing the sight it will need to go so far but just stake the sight down good by tapping on both sides of the dovetail with a punch and it will not came out.

Thanks shot1

I am looking forward to shooting it, can't wait!
I have seen a lot of the M-44 videos of it being shot, I haven't seen one shot in person yet though, can't wait to see what it does.

I plan on keeping it as an open sight shooter and am thinking about replacing the rear sight with a peep, maybe I can find one that is windage adjustable,
If this 91/30 proves to be accurate enough, i might get one of those reproduction PU scope mounts for it, but we will have to see about that after i get it here and take it to the range!

I put the mojo peep sights on mine.  Helps to shrink the groups for some reason.  Key is finding the ammo that shoots best out of the rifle and sticking with it.

Thanks!
Are the Mojo's windage adjustable?
I was looking at them the other day, but didn't see anything in their add about this!
I do like the fact that you do not have to do any mods to the gun other than to remove the original rear sight top assembly.

Went and picked these 2 up from my FFL guy yesterday.
They are in really nice condition, but the guy I got them from made a mistake on the 91/30, it turned out to be a 1933 Izhevsk and not a 1932 Tula, but thats ok, they both have really nice bores, sharp lands and shiny lands and groves, the M44 looks the best, it appears to have never been shot, but I can tell from some wear on the receiver that it had been.

After getting home with them yesterday, I spent from about 4:00pm to midnight tearing them down and cleaning all the cosmoline out and off of them with dawn and some degreaser.

Heres some pics!

You sure are right about the fireball :o My one and only Mosin was a M44. My thoughts were to make a pick-up gun out of it. I did a Bubba job on it(I know) Cardinal sin)but I did it anyway. There are only a Gazillion floating around out there, and the chances of them becoming rare are slim to none. On one of my range trips with it, I forgot to put hearing protection on, and I couldn't hear normal for about a week. You couldn't run fast enough to give me another 44 or 38. I would like to Bubba a 91/30 though :) I did make a few bucks on the 44 after the Bubba job.

Yup!
That looks sweet!

You won't hear me saying its a sin.
I don't know what collectors are so concerned about with others modifying a gun.
Heck, if anything, you would think that they would encourage it for the simple fact that it makes their collection just that much more rare!
Besides, not everyone is a collector or carries the collector mentality.

My guns are my guns.
I buy them as users, and if I feel a gun needs a tweak to make it more usable to me, then thats what I will do!
I mean seriously, say you have a new girlfriend and you talked her into doing something different with her hair and bought her some new clothes, then you run into her last boyfriend, is he going to berate you because you defaced her?
Another example: You buy a somewhat well used 1968 Camaro SS, the first thing you do is have it re painted because you don't like the color or think it needs to be freshened up and you replace the wheels and tires, do the Camaro collectors come around and scoff at what you've done because you didn't leave it in its original untouched condition?

With that said and out of the way.

I took these out a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised.
I was using Mil surplus ammo, from factory 188, manufactured in 1976.
The M44 performed as expected, plenty of BOOM and fire balls, it shot a decent group at 100 yards, without a rest, just an elbow on the table I was able to get 2" groups.
But the 91/30, oh man!
Same shooting as above and was getting 1/2" groups with 5 nicely compact holes of touching groups that a nickle or there abouts would cover.
Talk about being tickled pink!

I can agree with that. Probably wouldnt modify a gun if it held any realy collectors value, but wouldnt think twice with anything else. It all comes down to the opinion of the gun owner. Everyone else should just sit back and admire!  8)

I recentlt put a scope rail on mine. The scope came in the other day and all I need now is scope rings. I cant wait to sight my 91/30 in.

Theres 2 ways to load a picture on here, you can use the attachments and other options tab bellow the box where you are writing your message if the picture is on your computer and you just want to load it to the site, click on browse and chose the spot on your computer where it is located and then click on the picture and follow the prompts, or if your picture is at a site like photobucket and you can get the url, click on the picture button at the tabs above the box toward the left, 4th tab from left and enter the url.

Looks good, what I can see of it that is.
any full pics of it evidrine?
Another question if you don't mind, where did you get the mount and bent bolt from?

My M44 and the last 91/30 hex both have suffered with patches of the original finish coming off, I wanted to protect it, so I made up a mix of spar urethane satin finish with about an extra 10% boiled linseed oil and 25 to 30 percent mineral spirits, just enough to make it flow well, had to put a tad extra spirits in it as the temps here while doing this was cold, the house inside was mid to upper 60's.
I stripped the old finish off the M44, applied a light coat of Red mahogany and then 8 coats of the spar mix, finished of with a couple of coats of finishing wax, and this is how it turned out!

It sure is. This particular one is very low profile. Bolt has to be done just right in order to clear it. They make others that sit a little higher but cost a fortune and personally I prefer it as low as possible.
