billy,
Hard to tell.....Usually, most countries of origin have a crest on the forward ring ( just in front of the chamber) that tells you what country it's from.  A great amount of the WW II Nazis issued Mausers were defaced of their swasticas and German Eagle markings when taken back by the Communist Block Countries.  Can you give other information such as length of bbl., over-all length, type of wood in the stock (laminated?), type of buttstock plate, Is the bolt bent down or straight?  Remember, that 8mm mausers existed back to around WW I and were made for many other countries around the world.  There are books available at the library with pictures to help.

Like savageT said  is the butt plate cupped or flat(shape), is there any markings on the side rail,  Is there a year(date) on the top of the reciever? Now if there is no other markings how is the handguard made?? Does it go from the front of the rear site forward?(a shorty?) Or is it from the reciever to the front (long)??  If its a shorty it sounds like a German mauser. How long is the barrel?(karbine or long rifle?)   BigBill
