Poor congressman
« on: August 29, 2011, 12:07:40 PM »
Everyone complains about their job now and then, and members of Congress are no exception.
A few lawmakers have suggested in recent months that despite a $174,000 annual salary, generous health care and pensions, and perks for things like travel and mail, being one of the elite 435 ain't always what it's cracked up to be. And when you calculate the hours they put in, the pay isn't stellar either, they say.
The Florida Capital News reported last week on a speech Steve Southerland, a Republican representative, gave to a retirement community in Tallahassee in which he complained about some of the parts of his new job:
"He said his $174,000 salary is not so much, considering the hours a member of the House puts in, and that he had to sever ties with his family business in Panama City. Southerland also said there are no instant pensions or free health insurance, as some of his constituents often ask him about in Congress.
"'And by the way, did I mention? They're shooting at us. There is law-enforcement security in this room right now, and why is that?" Southerland told about 125 people in an auditorium at the Westminster Oaks retirement community. "If you think this job pays too much, with those kinds of risks and cutting me off from my family business, I'll just tell you: This job don't mean that much to me. I had a good life in Panama City.'
"...He added that 'if you took the hours that I work and divided it into my pay,' the $174,000 salary would not seem so high."
Southerland, a freshman, ran a family funeral home business in Panama City and earned about $90,000 before joining Congress in January.
His sentiments were not unlike those expressed by Sean Duffy, a Republican representative from Wisconsin, when he said in March it was a "struggle" to pay his mortgage and student loans with his congressional salary. "At this point, I'm not living high on the hog," Duffy, a father of six, said. (Compared to his colleagues, Duffy is one of the least wealthy members of Congress.)

it might be tough for a freshman, but if he'll hang in there and sell his votes to the right PAC, he'll be well compensated.

It probablly is tuff for a Republican frosh. If he was a Democrat he could look forward to the typical suplemental income from bribes, tax evasion and under the table paybacks.

This Republican freshman just needs to set up a meeting with Rangel, Dodd and Guitner. Just these 3 alone will show him the ropes and turn that $174k into a couple of million.

more struggling to make ends meet-
At the height of the debate over a possible government shutdown last spring, Linda Sánchez, a Democratic representative from California, said during an MSNBC interview that she was living "paycheck to paycheck" on her congressional salary. And she wasn't the only one. Renee Ellmers, a Republican representative from North Carolina, was asked if she would forgo her pay in the case of a shutdown. Ellmers declined, saying, "I need my paycheck."

Are times really so tough that even members of Congress are struggling to get by? The numbers suggest otherwise. A recent analysis of congressional pay found that members of Congress earn about 3.4 times the salary of the average American worker. Using that standard, members of Congress are among the highest paid legislators in the developed world.

This talk probably won't help Congress' approval rating. The federal government is the worst-rated industry in the country, viewed favorably by only 17 percent of Americans, according to a new Gallup survey.

They just need to talk to Rangel, Dodd and some of the cronies in the White House. Between advise from these ilks along with a "calling", say for Global Warming, they too can make a few million on the side. Have them talk to Gore too.

Climate Change: Means the weather today was differant than it was the prior day and differant than it will be tommrow. So basically, it means nothing. Yes, $174k is an excellant salary and one should feel as though this is a safe place to be with few or no complaints.

Your getting weather and climate mixed up.
Climate encompasses the statistics of temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, wind, rainfall, atmospheric particle count and other meteorological elemental measurements in a given region over long periods. Climate can be contrasted to weather, which is the present condition of these elements and their variations over shorter periods.

No I'm not. Your taking the comments literally with respect to time. The subject is the weather or it can be the climate. In any case, for the layman they are the same. The reference to today/yesterday/tomorrow are as close or as wide apart as they need to be to fit. You know what I mean…..

This only proves that, when allowed to act outside his lawfully limited authority,a U.S. President is capable of unleashing horrendous violence against the lives, liberty, and property of those he pretends to serve...........

Got no sympathy for someone going from  $90K a year to $174k a year and struggling to make it. Double the salary and are having a tough time?
I know those limos cost extra and of course the luxury appartment instead of the modest one.
If senior citizens and large familys can squeak by on less than $20k a year maybe congress should look at their own personal spending habits.
Long hours? Try working for minimum wage trying to support a wife and kid. Then have mishap so you have medical bills on top of that.
Maybe congress should try flipping burgers for a week before they cry about their salaries.

And you'd be wrong again.  When you thought mostly Dem Congressmen were rich you said they must be following Rangel, Dodd, and Geitner (even though Geitner is a GOPer from the Golden Sachs faction). But when we find out that about 2 to every 1 rich Congressmen are actually GOPers, you suddenly proclaim they are just good businessmen..!  . HUh... ::)

This is what we mean by the tangled pretzel logic of 'self-styled' conservatives who astroturf and shoot from the hip....they end up with no credibility, nor make sense.... ::)

Since you are trying to make this a democrat vs. republican issue 7 out of the top 10 richest are democrats. Thats 70% of the top ten richest congress members-democrats who want to "redistribute" your wealth. Almost half the democrats on the entire list are in the top 10. So whats your point?

Nope....but to your original point....that they learned well from the likes of Rangel, Dodd, and Geitner....!

...TM7

That would appear to be a typical Liberal conclusion. If you are rich you must be corrupt. Nothing could be furthere from the truth.

I offered Rangel, Dodd and Guetner because we know they are corrupt.
.

I never said mostly Democrat Congressman are rich. ??? :P In fact I never said anyone was mostly rich. ::) What I said was the Republlican frosh in congress need to talk to Rangel, Dodd and Gueinter to find out how to game the system and turn thier $174k salary into millions.

You need to figure out this simple stuff then you can throw some zingers if you want.
.

Here's what you originally said..."They just need to talk to Rangel, Dodd and some of the cronies in the White House. Between advise from these ilks along with a "calling", say for Global Warming, they too can make a few million on the side. Have them talk to Gore too.
"

So you inferred that if these frosh Congressmen want to get rich they need to talk to the DNC apparachiks; implying if they want to get rich illicitly. Then you implied that they should talk to GOPers if they want to get rich using good business practices while implying that the GOPers have a monopoly on good business practices; althought I believe Geitner is still a GOPer from G S.

Fact is none of this is true, but is just anti-hype. We well know your political allegiances...but painting one side having more virtual than the other side is disingenous....and seems to be a common trait of the self-styled conservative clique.

Can't you just make up your mind what I wrote? Its there for the reading.

The fact is the liberal democrats are the most corrupt and they are the ones trying to fundementially change this country into something it is not suppose to be.

Stop denying it. Its directly in front of your eyes.

Is that like conservative Republicans trying to make this country into a Fourth Reich USA?

Only a Liberal could compare following the Constitution to Nazi principals.

But I guess its like the Communist Doctrine says (now adopted by the liberal democrats), identify the opponents and throw everything at them, lies and all. You’re doing good Junior. Stalin would be proud of you.

This Republican freshman just needs to set up a meeting with Rangel, Dodd and Guitner. Just these 3 alone will show him the ropes and turn that $174k into a couple of million.

.
Here's the list for Top 50 Richest Congressmen....Rangel and and Dodd are not on this list, however.  And Timothy Geitner is a Repubnik I believe.

There are 32 GOPers and 18 Dems on the list...almost 2 to 1 ratio....

I get it now TM. Your a mind reader. A horrible one, but self proclaimed anyway. Next time why don't I just open a response post and leave it blank. You can then look into your crystal ball, read my mind and post what I was going to post in a reply. That should be perfect. This way there would be no comparison for other forum members to see you putting words in my mouth and it would save you from looking like a clown.
