Brass is free to me, cast bullets are free for me, all it takes is primers and a can of Unique.  I'm not fast, I'm deliberate.

Ok Swampy, I can see how you would have not trouble with the grip safety. I was doing 4-500 a session and 1,000-1,500 a week. Big difference. When you pass 35,000 rds a year you will understand what I said about a beavertail grip safety.

Well it has happened. The Messiah has returned. ::) He is hiding right now on earth as Mike in V.  I can joke too! That or Mike has decided to run for political office. umm, no I think the first is more likely. Surely a died in the wool gunner would not take up politics!  :-*

Happy New Year to us all. May it be as good as we fear it shall be bad. God Bless Us All

It all depends on how high you grip and, perhaps, the size of your hand.
I have friends who are not bothered by the GI. On the other hand, my grip is so high I sometimes have a problem with the grip safety also (not engageing).
I have my grip safety's lighteneded---My smith WILL NOT pin it.

I would take a Remington--sight unseen--over a couple of others on the market.
I guess that comes from trust----course---trust can get you killed also.

I don't believe any of this.

I have the same problem with the grip safety as William. Had to do a little work on the sear springs to fix it. If I shoot a GI with my high grip I get slide tracks quickly. After a couple of mags it's bleeding. Guess my grip has changed from the old army days, or maybe my hands are fatter, ok likely both. I don't currently own a 1911 without an extended beaver tail. I keep a roll of masking tape in my kit for taping targets. It works well for taping up the hand if I need to shoot someone else's without the BT.

Swampy, be specific. Do you not believe that the standard grip safety will cut you if you shoot that much or do you not believe that I could shoot that much?

Will an old style grip safety cut you? I've never had any problem but I have long fingers and boney hands.

twenty  five years ago I had the ambition to get to the top of practical shooting. The men at the top average 50,000 rds a year for 8-10 years to get to the top.  As the director of my clubs practical shooting division I had access to the indoor range when ever I pleased.  I had a high paying job in the petro-chemical industry. I worked 12 hr shifts 3 on 3 off so I had plenty of free time. I worked a lot of overtime so that was my shooting money. We actually had an odd schedule where we worked 36 hours one week and 48 the next. We did not get overtime for the extra hours but we did get paid time off. Between my 3 weeks vacation and 8 weeks comp time I could go to any big match I wanted. We would drive up to 5 hrs every weekend to find a 'local' match.  Between the Michigan league and the Ontario league we were kept busy.

I was shooting a .45 with a 3 chamber comp of my design. It took a 155gr bullet. A local caster sold to me at dealer cost for the advertising. In 1986, leading up to the World IPSC Championship in Orlando Florida I did indeed shoot 37,000 rds. It cost me a tad over $5,000 in components.

It put my blood lead level into the danger zone. I could not shoot indoors for 16 months to allow the lead level to come down.

Yep, I did shoot that much.

Ummm, Swampy - not pure fabrication at all.  I know a bunch of IDPA shooters who regularly shoot up to 1,000 rounds per month, in a light month and the idea of going up to 36-37k rounds of ammo a year preparing for matches is hardly inconceivable.

I believe some people may shoot that much.  Internet tall tales abound.

hmm, so I am telling tall tails?

I packed it in. With my blood lead level so high, and living in Michigan I could not shoot in winter unless I shot indoors, I gave it up and just continued to shoot matches instead. Between our regular Thursday night indoor shoot and weekend matches that still put me over 10,000 rds a year.

I stopped shooting when I went to Nursing School, then when I got a job I concentrated on my work. When I divorced and moved to Phoenix I got into shooting again.  I was able to schedule my work around the regular shoots. Tuesday Night Steel at Rio Salado, Thursday night paper and steel at Ben Avery and weekend USPSA matches at Ben Avery once a month and Rio Salado every weekend. They actually have 4 USPSA clubs using the same range. When my best friend told me she wanted me to go to the IRC in 2000 I said I did not have a revolver. She said "so buy one". I did. A hard chromed heavy (very) barrel K-frame complete with Aimpoint, belt, holster, speed loaders and carry box. Then I bought a clapped out Dillon 1050 in .38 Special. Dillon did a total rebuild for free. We then practiced in earnest. I shot 8,000 rds in the 10 weeks before the 2000 IRC. Having never owned a revolver before I was quite pleased with my fifth place finish. My friend Machelle finished 6th.  It was great fun. Our local hero revolver man Vic Pickett finished 2nd, again. Jerry Miculek is FAST.

I also competed in the 2000 USPSA/ IPSC Hemishpere Championship.
Since no one knew me they thought I might be a ringer and I was placed in the Womens Super Squad. I was in total hero worship but I really did not belong there. I did not do well. I was just so hero struck. All of the women shooters I idolized were in my squad.

I have been sidelined with one darn thing after another since then. I did manage to get to the 2004 USPSA Nationals where I managed to crawl home with my tail tucked 'tween my legs having  finished 3rd last. Oh the shame.

I had surgery for an obstructed bowel in 2005. Not being a kid anymore I healed slowly. I was gearing up for the 2007 USPSA Nationals when I broke my back, got a MRSA infection in the vertabra which led to 6 fused vertabrae and total disability with severe chronic pain.

So, now I do not shoot so much, as in none since I broke my back.

oh yes, I forgot.  In the late 1980s I bought military surplus .45 ACP brass. It arrived in 2 oversize military drums.  120,000 pcs. I kept 10,000pcs for myself and sold the rest.
