.270 Win bullet choices for reloading?
« on: January 05, 2004, 01:46:19 PM »
O.K. guys....I'm new to the venerable .270 Win and am putting together my materials to develop a good Deer load for short to medium range effectiveness in a Wby Mark V Stainless .270 (24" barrel).
From the reviews I've read so far the 130 gr Ballistic Tip bullets are very effective but there seems to be a disintegration factor for ballistic tips at closer ranges,(50-100yds)....maybe an Accubond or SST Interlock ?....or do I go up to 140 0r 150gr on the ballistic tips so they hold up better?

I'd like some input/experiences/recipes from fellow GBers...

My son in law has used the Speer 130g BTSP on a few deer, and the meat desruction was more than I like to see. We found the Hornady 140g BTSP holds together better, and does a better job all around. He likes to shoot the boat tails, and after looking at his 300 yard targets I can't argue.

I only have one .270, a Remington 700 ADL, and only used it once to take a heavy muley.  The only bullet I tried was the Hornady 140g BTSP.  Worked perfectly and shoots well on top of a load of Accurate 4350 powder.

Nice buck Snowshoe! I shot one like that last fall with a Sako .308 w a 165 gr Win Ballistic Silvertip. The bullet went through both shoulders and boiler room and exited with a hole the size of a silver dollar. The .270 is a little faster with a 140 so I need a tougher bullet than a ballistic tip, especially when my usual shot is only 50-75 yds.

These have worked for me for  thirty years on deer all over the west, from Texas to Colorado and Utah to Wyoming and Idaho.

Bullet:   130 grain Nosler Partition

Load:     60 Grains of H4831
                or

            60 Grains of RL 22.

Gets 3,050 fps in 22" barrel. Kills like Thor's Hammer.

I have killed deer as far away as 300 yards (measured wtih laser RF) and as close as 20 feet.  The Nosler partition has never let me down, although some other bullets have, namely the 130 Barnes X bullet (no expansion)  and the Winchester Power Point factory load (no exit and very little tissue damage on a broadside lung shot at about 150 yds.)  With the Nosler Partition, they're dead by the time I get to them.  With other bullets I've had to finish them off as they were thrashing and flopping around. I really prefer not to have to see that.  So I stick to Nosler Partitions!

Good to the very last shot!

I have a pair of 270's.  They both shoot the same loads great.  I use either a 130 gr Hornady spire point over 59.4 gr H4831, or 140 gr Nosler BT over 58.3 gr of RL22.  Both have shot under 3/4" for me, and I load these particular loads using a dipper........Either bullet will do for mule deer.  Nosler Partitions are always a good choice as well.

Tom

The Hornady 130 and 150 grain flat base spire points have always performed well for me.  I also like Speer's 150 grain hotcor spitzer especially for shorter range deer hunting or elk. My favored loads are 60 grains of H4831 with the 130 grain hornady and 57 grains of the same powder for the two 150 grain bullets. Winchester brass and winchester standard large rifle primers.  The 130 is a bit hard on deer at really close ranges.

Here's a pair of bullets I reload and suggest you should try:

The Sierra 135 gr. Match King and the Sierra 150 GameKing.  Both bullets can be reloaded with the same powder.  The length and profile of both is almost the same (meaning they will stabilize very similarly).  The 150 GK is a good short or long range hunting load and the 135 MK is possibly the best for target shooting.  Both loads are capable of shooting one hole 100 yards groups with some TLC in preparation.

For ranges from point blank to way out there, I use Nosler Partitions.  They have worked for the 40 years I have been using them and I can find no reason to change.  Ballistic Tips DO have a problem fragmenting at velocities over 2800 fps. in the calibers I have tried them in.  Only hope the Nosler's AccuBonds work better.  Lawdog
