Vegetarians
« on: August 30, 2011, 12:00:56 PM »
Hey folks, hope everyone is doing well. On a guitar forum that I belong to there's a few folks that seem to think that being a vegetarian makes them superior to us hunters and meat eaters. I pointed out to them a simple fact or two.

Fact 1) They are simply choosing to eat one group of living things over another.

Fact 2)  Not only that but they should be extremely ashamed of themselves as plants are totaly helpless and unable run!

Gee guys, why won't they talk to me any more?  :o   ;)

That's a common affliction of vegetarians. Here's some fun thoughts:

1) For those vegetarians who eat cheese, keep in mind that most true cheeses are made with rennet, the lining of a calf or lamb stomach, so it's not truly vegetarian fare.

2) The biomass of insects killed with pesticides, and road kills involved in getting vegetables and fruits to market make the difference between vegetarians and the rest of us a very small difference. Transit of fruits and vegetables generally requires crossing long distances, so it's the least "green" way of distributing foods.

3) Among people with the world's highest incidence of heart disease are regional population of Asian Indian men who are vegetarians. It's the ghee (clarified butter) that they use for cooking fat that is the culprit.

4) Soy, which is so popular in America as tofu and a number of other "health foods" is actually a potentially hazardous food to children, and blocks the uptake of nutrients in both children and adults. Traditional use of soy was in fermented products like fermented tofu (practically unobtainable in the US,  and it stinks to high heaven), soy sauce, and the like. The unfermented soy products pose a true hazard and I believe it is just a matter of time before there is a backlash against it. There's a lot of big money behind soy, though.

On the other hand, eating less meat is a good idea for a number of reasons. It's worth studying a bit of the vegetarian cuisines. There are a lot of good ideas there.  A lot of the militancy of some vegetarians, combined with the perception that vegetarians only eat uninteresting "rabbit food" works against a broader acceptance of the varied and delicious meatless cuisines the world has to offer.

I play Classic Rock, Southern Rock, Blues and Country. I currently own 4 guitars that I'm very fond of;

Aria Strat ( After a set-up this has turned out to be a very sweat little guitar!)

My 1967 Univox ( Bought it when I was 14, 45 years ago. Awesome guitar!)

Peavy JF-1 EX Hartley Peavy Signature Series ( Always wanted a hollowbody and am very happy with this. )

Epiphone Les Paul Standard Blueburst Plus Top ( My baby! :) )

Thanks. I shudder when I think of all that acoustic has been through with me. It's like a member of the family and goes to my daughter when she retires from the Navy. If something is worth having it's worth taking care of. :) I love my guitars.  ;D

I work with a feminist, lesbian, vegetarian, liberal woman. Believe it or not we're actually friends even though we disagree on pretty much everything.

Over the years she has told me about how healthy it is to be a vegetarian. She has a little bit of that smugness that a lot of vegetarians have toward us meat eaters. The funny thing is she is at least 30-40 pounds overweight. I don't have the guts to ask her why she's overweight if being a vegetarian is so healthy. ::)

There is a gal I know, that was a vegatarian. Last year,(I only see her for a few weeks at a time at Camp Perry) she was eating a salad with broiled fish on it. I asked her why the switch. Seems she was having problems,(she didn't go into details), but her doctor told her she needed the protien from meat. Didn't see her this year, but am wondering if she has to continue? I guess in their minds, it's what they have to do. gypsyman

Did you ever notice that vegetarians always seem to be standing around waiting to be eaten by the carnivores and omnivores ?

The Good Lord equipped me to be an omnivore having k9 teeth for tearing meat as well as molars for grinding vegetables and grains so who am I to argue.   ;D

One of my sister-in-laws daughters came home one day and announced that she was going to become a vegetarian.  So my SIL did some research into what she needed to eat to get the nutrition and protein she needed and prepared her special meals while fixing the usual steaks, burgers, meat lasagna, etc. that she always fixed for the rest of the family.  After about three weeks of eating ton's of beans and lentils while everyone else ate tasty meat dishes the vegetarian diet went out the window.  ;D

i will have to hand it to vegans, i would guess that stopping the eating of meat for me would be the hardest thing i would ever have to do.any other vices would pale in comparison to giveing up a perfectly seared slice of venison backstrap.
