44 mag 265 ftx?
« on: August 31, 2011, 02:45:01 AM »
hello everyone.

i am from new zealand and have recently purhased a cva scout in 44 mag. have a bit of a plan for this rifle which involves cutting the barrel down to 15-16" and having a suppressor fitted for use with subsonic rounds, the other use being as a pack rifle firing supersonic ammo without the suppressor on for an ultra portable package.

i have bought a box of hornady 265gr ftx projectiles as i was planning to ream to 445 supermag for a bit more reach but i am really struggling to find brass here. so my options appear to be either to leave it as a 44 mag or go for 444 marlin with more readily available brass. i am worried the marlin may be a bit too much for what might end up being  a very lightweight wee rifle, and have unacceptable muzzle blast with the short barrel? also it would make subsonic loading more difficult compared to a standard 44 mag.

so what i would like to know is whether there is any way to use a standard 44 mag case to get the 265 up to any kind of decent velocity? i would ideally like to be able to shoot medium sized deer out to around 150-180 yards. being a single shot can i seat them right out to allow a bit more powder capacity? or would things just get dangerous?

any help would be greatly appreciated, the 445 really did sound ideal but i do not to be stuck without brass!

thanks.
adam.

I'm not sure how tight that CVA chamber is, but I would think you could seat the bullets out a little for more powder capacity, just be careful.  In the H&R handi rifles, I am able to seat bullets out an extra 1/8" or so without any problem.  I can use the Magtech 240 grain bullets and use the bottom canelure without any problems.

Some of the guys on the H&R forum have reamed theirs out to 445 Supermag and I don't recall anyone complaining of loss of accuracy when shooting 44 mags after reaming??

That would allow you to seat your bullets (in the 44 mag case) out a looooong ways!  Just an idea.

Should be some old threads on the Handi-rifle forum if you search.

How did your .445 turn out ?   Do .445s & 44mags fly ok ?   Do you think reciever/barrel will take the added pressure ?
