What do you prefer? A pocket holster or just a pocket?
« on: August 31, 2011, 10:06:03 AM »
Hello Conceal Carry Friends.
I was curious how you all conceal your weapon of choice.  I was thinking in particular of the popular micro .380's on the market.  Do you use a pocket holster or just throw the gun in your pocket? Perhaps you have another method.

My model 60 Smith or the Kel-Tec PF9 in a pocket holster slide in the front jeans pocket great.  I'd say 95% of the people don't have any idea that I am packing.

Mine is made by a Blackhawk.  It is nylon with a band of some type of rubbery material around the middle of it to keep it stable in the pocket and keep it from coming out of the pocket when drawing the gun.  It works great with either my 2" S&W m60 or my wife's 2" Charter Arms.  But I only pocket carry when I am wearing my overalls (no waste band).  Most of the time I carry inside my waste band either using an inside waste band holster with my m60 or just the belt clip on my P-11.

Mine is made by Backwoods leather out of Portsmith Va. There are some that look like it on the net for sale less the plastic . Mine is very thin and as noted has a flat plastic piece to keep it from printing. I have it for a airweight J frame , it has a hole in it from about 8 years of wear. I have never used the synthetic ones so can't say if they are better or equal. One consideration is grit will get in and ruin the finish on your gun. I work construction and grit is part of the job , I have worn the outside corner flat on the top strap of my gun and the finish off other places. Note 2 you sweat and the gun rust no matter the finish clean it. My 340 PD with the speical finish has rust on the CYL release and other spots.

a holster in the pocket prevents shooting something important ;)

It will also put you in compliance for some states and agencies who require any firearm to be in a holster.  Remember, don't put anything else in that pocket, period.

I agree that rust is a constant threat and your weapon will have a new look to it after a few months.  Keep it clean and oiled about every other day or so.  I've tried about 10 different manufacturers and types of pocket holsters for J frames, and Ruger LCP & LCR.  I recommend DeSantis in the pocket. YMMV. :D

It largely depends on the shorts/pants I am wearing.  If the pocket is large where my LC9 can fall sideways, then my pocket holster is required.  But I have several pairs of shorts/pants that it just sits vertical with no problems.

If I carry in my pocket I always use a holster. It just seems safer to me. Keeps the trigger protected from things. like my finger, and keeps lint and stuff out of the firearm.

I mostly carry a Glock 27 inside the waistband, in a holster I made with a clip, and thin suede leather buffalo. I carry a Model 23 Glock the same way, sometimes.

I carry a Kel Tec P32 as backup to my PF-9. Usualy I carry it in a Fobus Evolution II tactical holster on my belt. Recently my son gave me a Blackhawk pocket holster and I have to admit I kinda like it. It keeps the .32 in position to draw, protects the trigger and is quite comfortable in the pocket. I can see times when I might prefer it over belt carry. To me a pocket holster has many more benifits than carrying a firearm loose in your pocket. I've tried that and didn't much care for it at all.

Due to leg problems I no longer carry much in pants/levi pockets.  Instead I hve had some dress vests cut by Tribe America in Scottsdale.  They get cut with two extra interior pockets, one each side, at a 40degree cant.  I have a couple auto loaders including a P11 Kel tec, but I drop a .38 Jframe snub in each pocket.  I don't even try one in each hand, however I am getting better at a New York reload.

If you ever carry something like the Ruger LCP or Keltec P32 - P3AT in you pocket without a holster that covers the trigger NEVER CARRY ANYTHING ELSE IN THE POCKET.  A pocket knife or keys can get into the trigger guard and cause a discharge. I always carry in a pocket holster that I made but it is exactly like the HUNTER 2500 Pocket Holster that run around $23.00 at Mid-Way USA product # 384-209 for the LCP or P3AT. It looks like a leather wallet on one side with a holster on the other side that you can slip you hand between the leather flap wallet looking side and the holster and draw the pistol from the pocket and the holster stays in the pocket. If it prints in your pocket it looks just like a wallet in your pocket because it covers the entire pistol. Many of the pocket holsters do not cover the grip of the pistol and you see the pistol grip plainly when it prints in a pocket. The  Super Fly Pocket Holsters are pretty much the same but made out of Synthetic materal with a sticky exterior but they run around $28.00 from Mid-Way  Product # 944-079 for the LCP or Keltec.

To show you how well the pocket holster I use works. I ALWAYS carry my P3AT in my pocket unless I go into some place that has a metal detector. IT IS MY DECISION TO BE TRIED BY TWELVE THAN BE CARRIED BY SIX. I have on two occasions been questioned by "Rent a cop's" in a hospital and a shopping center that was posted as to if I was carrying a gun when they have seen the bulge under my shirt on my waste where I carry a cell phone and a glasses case strapped to my belt. I just pulled up my shirt and showed them my cell phone and glasses case that is on my belt and then I chide them for making such an assumption which could actually get them killed if I was some criminal etc. I ask them what would happen if somebody did have a gun and they pulled it on them. Would they hit them with their radio which is the only thing they would have to defend themselves with.  ;D

I carry a P32 as backup to my PF9. Don't like it loose in my pocket at all. Besides lint getting where it don't need to be, it doesn't stay in position like with a pocket holster. As inexpensive as many are it just makes good sense to use one. Also with a holster there's no worries of it printing. My favorite way to carry my P32 is in this wallet holster;

There have been several commerical holsters like the one pictured. I have seen where in some places they are considered illegal. If I remember a gun has to look like a gun and the holster like above alters the look of the gun . I know here they stopped selling them for that reason. If the gun had to be removed to fire it would be ok.

I know there seems to be some confusion, even within the BATFE itself. I now carry  letters from the Taney County, Missouri Sheriff's Dept. and the BATFE both stating I'm legal in carrying it.

Yep Bro, I think so too. :)  I don't often carry in it but at times it's the most practical. I now use a Black Hawk pocket holster for my P32 most often. I still like my Fobus Evolution II for my PF9

Funny how the same BATFE can give different interpretations in different places but it seems they do .

My LCP with CT laser is always carried in a DeSantis Nemisis pocket holster, breaks up the outline and keeps lint out.
