Birthday present!
« on: August 31, 2011, 10:13:01 AM »
I've been talking about the new Ruger flattop .44 Special for so long I guess my sweet spouse got tired of hearing it.  My birthday was yesterday, and I thought I was gonna pass out when I opened her gift.  I've had it about 24 hours now and I just can't seem to put it down.  I think it's the nicest gun Ruger has ever made.  It's the 4 5/8 model.  Fit and finish are perfect; balances in my hand like no Ruger I've ever had.  I got out my old Blackhawk in .45 Colt for comparison--the .44 is smaller and heavier (all steel), and the hump on the .45 has never looked so ugly as when laying it side-by-side with the flattop.  Trigger is better than good.  I can't wait to work up some loads and get to the range.

No sidearm is faster on the first shot than a single action revolver.  This one has the heft and feel of a Colt, yet it's stronger because it's a Ruger.  It probably is not the best concealed carry option, but I like it so much I just might do it.  I might even wear it to Applebees and sass people at the bar.

Your going to have trouble putting it down Mike, I bought one a few months ago just like yours, 4/58"...it's plenty accurate, I haven't tried anything except 250 grain Keith bullets yet, but am real happy with how they group.  I had Simply Rugged make me a holster for it.  I have carried it concealed back when the weather was a bit cooler, and will again when the temp drops.  I had been waiting for almost 30 years for Ruger to make the holes in their .357 bigger...they finally got around to it.  I also had some nice flat bottom cut grips made by Cary Chapman at CLC grips.  The only other thing I might change someday is the hammer....I think I need a Super Blackhawk wide spur hammer on it.
Have fun with your birthday present, you have a nice wife there.

Congratulations Mike. I was going to post a picture for you but suspected that it was one of those that would be on the very small size.

I like that front blade...Wish they would have put one like that on my Super.
