35 Caliber Speer 250Gr Grand Slams Found But Hurry.
« on: August 31, 2011, 06:42:52 PM »
I do not know how or where but Midway has found some of the Speer Grand Slam Bullets in 35 Caliber and have them at less than Half Price. If you are a fan of say the 35 Whelen you should take a look as these are no longer being made by Speer.

I only got 5 of which of which I wish I could have got more but the electric bills and so forth this year are killing me. But I am more of a hunter than a target shooter so the bullets should last me awhile.  I hope to find a good load for them as I am new into the 35 Whelen.

I have read that 54.OGr of RL-15 is a good one?

But powders I also have are IMR-3031,H-322,IMR-4350,  and TAC.

Looks like some people do like them.

And I find it funny when someone says they like or dislike anything with no real reasons or information  to base that fact on.

OK, i'll give you some first hand facts, i have personally shot several big game animals with Gran Slams and the bullets did NOT give the kind of deep penetration they should have, before comeing apart, like the .338 250 Gran Slams did on this moose,

If i'm paying for a premium bullet, i expect to get one and that means a hunting bullet that "stays together" to give DEEP penetration.  There are other choises that WILL give the deep penetration needed for brown bear and big moose, so why go second class?  To save Money???  I'd rather pay more and get something that works EVERY time.

Ok so you had a .338 250Gr Slam Come apart at the time it killed the animal shown so it is no good. So that also makes the .358 250Gr No good? But as they say that is what sells Fords VS Chevy is opinion.

I hunt Mainly Deer and Hog and hope to make it for Elk in the next couple of years. And with all of the good reports I have read about the 358 250 Gr Grand Slam and Hot Core I do feel they will get the job done.

You can "attempt" to ride me all you want, but i also shot quite a bit of big game with a 350 Rem. Mag. and got similar or worse results.  Same with other cartridges...

How many brown bears and moose have you shot???

Nice moose DM, I guess the bullet did its job  ;) .  I just dont have the "engineering" mentality to disect a bullet, maybe it is because I havent had the need to do so, I have only recovered two bullets from deer and elk one Nosler Partion and one Speer Hot Core (both out of a 7mm Mag), both mushroomed perfectly, with the core of the Speer being loose but still in the jacket.  Maybe some day (if the army will finally send me to Alaska) I can try the bullet out on an Alaskan moose.....but then maybe I will use my .45-70 with cast bullets....or......geez, I own too many rifles. ;D

Chief, i use to design/swage and sell bullets for big game.  I've always had a huge interest in bullets and how they react when they hit something.  Back before everyone was makeing bonded core bullets, there was pretty much only me and Jack Carter selling bonded core bullets, and i took the time to take apart every different designed bullet i could get my hands on and see what made it tick.  I also had a test box and lot's of big game to test them in too...

Anyway, for any cup/core bullet you want to work properly on the bigger big game, on something "other" than a perfect rib shot, you have to have a good bullet design, with good jacket material designed to somehow "lock" the core to the jacket, or a partition to stop bullet expansion.  If you don't, when push comes to shove, the jacket separates from the core, and they both soon stop penetrateing.  It's just that simple!!

All the gimmick names like "innerlock" and "coreloc" don't work in the above case, you really need to bond the core in, or use the NP design, as they aren't "gimmick", and do work.

I stand by my origional post on Gran Slams.

DM,

Yeah, I guess if I were going on a once in a life time hunt I would want to make sure that my bullet held together no matter what the conditions were on the shot. I have never had to make a shot on an animal from a "questionable" angle or position, I just wont shoot at an animal unless I know for sure I can place the bullet through the lungs.  I never shoot for the shoulder where I may hit the shoulder blade, too much meat damage.  I like Nosler Partitions very much (kind of expensive to shoot a lot) and would definately take them.  I just havent had any failures that you speak of and since you definately have the back ground in bullet knowledge I should  take your advise when selecting a bullet.  I knew a guy once who always used "premium" bullets for elk hunting based solely on the fact the he often had to take shots on elk that would be considered questionable as to the angle and postion of animal and wanted to make sure the bullet pushed clear through the heavy bone and muscle of the animal. But for deer hunting he never used premium bullets.  I sure like coming to these forums but often times when we boil all the advise down to gravy we have to make our own decisions based on practical experience. Thanks for the chat and advise, oh and really, that is a nice bull. Some day oh some day I hope to get a chance to shoot one, love moose meat.

Drillingman I am not riding you but you did quote me but must have missed what I said above. So again at this time I have not Shot or Shot at or had the chance to take a Shot towards a Bear or a Moose.

But from what I do Hunt at this time I do feel the 250Gr Speer Grand Slam should work well.

But again Nice Moose.

That moose was number 20 something, maybe 5 or 6 and it was a pretty good one in a VERY tough place to pack him out...

Anyway, the point i was trying to get across about GS bullets is, they are over priced, and don't offer "premium" performance.  They aren't bad bullets, just not as good as a few others that cost no mone...

Most guys are so over gunned for deer/blk. bear ect..., that any half decent bullet will work for them, so i'm sure you won't be disapointed with those GS's for your purpose.  Then again, any other 250 grain 35 cal bullet would work just fine on those smaller animals too...

Drilling Man that is why I put up the link here for the Grand Slams as they were on sale for $17.49 per 50 which were a hair cheaper than the Hot Core. So if one purchased them on sale they were not at a premium price.

I felt for the kind of hunting I do along with a few others and for practice and the work up of rounds they would serve there purpose just fine. If I was going after a Bull Moose then I would probably pick the 250 Gr Nosler for just a hunt.

I'm not sure which Jack Carter your talking about  but Hornady used a design from Jack Carter for the Trophy Bonded Bear Claw bullet http://wssmzone.com/main/bullet_description.aspx?bid=29.

I'm surprised with all your experience you didn't use that bullet or another instead of the the Grand Slam.

Since you been in the bullet making/design business I'm sure you would first like to heard from a customer about a complain instead of hearing it from other sources.  I'd sure like to see the E-Mail you send Hornady about your concerns on their Grand Slam bullet?

Why would you be surprised?  I've tried MANY bullets over the years,  how else would a person gain actual experience with that brand/type of bullet???

A big part of designing and building bullets is, trying "others" on the market...

I miss spoke when i said Jack Carter, he came along later...  I should have said Bill Steiger!  Thanks for catching that, and sorry i got that wrong...  Bill was first at bonded core bullets, i came along right after that...

No I'm not trying to cause trouble.  You post your problems with Grand Slam bullets and you don't take your complaint to Speers?  Again since you were in the business wouldn't you appreciate hearing from a well  known bullet maker (like you claim to be)  about the problem with your bullets instead of hearing it from some else first?

Pretty simple question to answer

Pretty simple question to answer

The "simple" answer is, work on your reading and comprehension skills...

What part of "use to" don't you understand?

Where did i say i was or wasn't "well known"?

Where did i say i didn't contact Speer?

There's a number of folks right here on this site who know that i don't post BS in here, i don't see that i have to prove anything to you, you won't even take the time to research the subject enough to make accurate statements.

Like i said, your "reading and comprehension skills" are lacking, so why don't you go work on them instead of wasteing time trying to discredit me?
