6mmBR in T/C Contender For Whitetail Deer Hunting ????
« on: September 01, 2011, 02:30:11 PM »
I'm very seriously looking at getting a T/C Contender in the 6mmBR to hunt Whitetail Deer. Does anyone have any experience with the 6mmBR hunting Whitetail Deer ?

I appreciate your thoughts and input.

Fred

I'm not sure but I believe that the 6BR would be an Encore only cartridge. I think it is too hot for the Contender.

Some Contender barrels have been produced in the BR calibers but I'm pretty sure they've been marked "NOT for use with factory loads" because of the pressure issues as mentioned above. I don't think SSK will chamber these anymore. Probably a better option if you're set on a Contender rather than an Encore would be the 6mm TCU. It's not far behind the 6BR velocity wise.

For the Contender you might also look into the 225 Winchester case necked up to 6mm called the 6mm-225 and also the 6mm JDJ from SSK.  They come closest to the 6BR. The 6 BR according to the Sierra manual our of an XP-100 15" barrel will do 200 fps more with most bullets. I have 6mm-225 Win. that I got in a lump purchase of an action and 3 different barrels from an estate sale. I do not know who made the barrel which is CM and 14" long and is a tack driver but the problem is that it has a 12" twist and will not shoot anything over an 80 Gr bullet. I load 30 grs Varget behind the Sierra 80 gr SSP bullet for 2700 fps and have killed a few deer with it. It does the job but I have since demoted it to varmint status because I got a 14" 30-30AI the just hammers deer with 125 Nosler BT at 2670 fps.  ;D

The 6BR would be and Encore caliber. I would also go for a 9 or 10 twist barrel so you can shoot heaver bullets for deer. A 90 gr Ballistic Tip around 2800 fps of so should work pretty well.

Fred, Damn right it works. I have had an SSK barrel (Shillen) since about 1995 and use max loads of H322 and the 80 gr. Speer SP and the Hornady 80 gr SSSP for antelope and WT. I have also used the 85 gr Nosler PT and it is better on larger WT w/shoulder shots. My 6BR Rem. is a standard 14" Contender SSK with the barrel marked "Factory or reduced loads only". It is probably the most accurate contender barrel I have ever shot (I have 6 bbls. from 17 Rem to 35 Rem now) and is plenty of gun out to 150 yds. if you shoot them right.-Muddy
