they say it will have 67 lbs of rearward thrust. Gonna take a steely eyed rocket man to fire it normally. I may tie it down and fire it with a pull rope.

I have been known, like so many other boys, to like to see things go BANG!
But.......
I hope that you use a 45-70 equiv. load to test it and/or put all the components to good use  ;) (I hate wasten' stuff anymore).

Well its here. I must say the barrel is nice looking, deep colt black. Its an insert in a 10 gauge. The brake is nicely made and impressive looking. The stock set is mint and the first ive seen like it. Im going to see if the barrel sits on my other ten gauge and then give it camo stocks from the other 10 also. Ill turn it into a morphadite 45-70 black powder. All in all im satisfied that itll be usable.

Im sure you can make some healthy level 2, 45-70 equiv. loads for it that would be lots o' fun, and Im sure 'real' .458s get loaded 'down' too.
Glad you didnt get burned too bad for the noble effort you have put into this.
We will wait, with baited breath, your pics and range report!

Since no one gets 2350 fps with the .458 in strong bolt guns I'd not bother using that for calculations. Most reports I've seen for factory loads and book handloads show closer to 2050 fps which is why the Lott was invented to get what the .458 was originally said to deliver and I seem to recall that is only about 2250 fps or a bit more. No I didn't look the numbers up am just going on memory but in the real world I don't think 2350 is realistic for a 500 grain.

I agree the book loads for the 458 WM are not 2,350 fps but for this calculation I went to ammoguide.com.  The maximum velocity for a 458 WM from ammoguide is 2,350 fps.  I did however use the wrong powder weight, it should have been 81 grains not 75 grains, which would put the recoil over 79 pounds.  I doubt Tom is going to try a 458 WM round in his new rifle so it really isn't a calculation that means a lot.

gcrank1,

thanks for the doubles link.  I do think we need a law that says when someone's eyes get so bad that they need a scope they must sell their classic double rifles and buy bolt guns.  It is a shame they put optics on some of those old rifles. :(
