What would be better for using as the stub a shotgun barrel or centerfire barrel

HELP the unknowing !! Will some body please tell me what a
stub gun is and the process  to make a stubbed barrel.
I would like this information from the people that
know what there are doing. No acronyms please. reclusej

Most of the stubs that I have seen are threaded.

Just curious but how would one go about stubbing a shotgun barrel without having to machine a insert for the stub and a new ejector setup?

Depends on what chambering you want to do, smaller case heads and low pressure rounds will work fine on an 1137 mild steel shotgun barrel stub, but if you want a high pressure round, a 4140 rifle barrel stub would be advisable.

Do a search on here for "32-20 Handi" by Trotterlg. When he did my 32-20 Handi he took step by step pictures and posted them. My donor barrel was a 410 but like Tim says, if you're going with a high pressure round you're better off using a rifle barrel for the donor.

I understand the thinking for that Tim. But frankly its not an issue. The barrel that your putting in the stub will be in sufficient diameter and proper steel so this is not a issue at all. Think about it... A barrel dosent know if its going into a bolt, pump or auto. None of these have anything over the barrel. No one on any compitence would attempt to chamber a round in a barrel of sufficient diameter reguardless of how its mounted. The stregnth or lack of dosent enter the equasion.

CW, seems to me we've had this discussion before and the consensus was the thin wall of the male threaded barrel should be supported in a rifle barrel stub instead of a shotgun stub on high pressure chamberings. I do know that Wayne wouldn't do my 6.5x55 on a shotgun barrel but had no questions on doing it on a 308 Win barrel stub.

To me it comes down to this statement:
Using rifle barrel as a stub for a high pressure / high power rifle  is a lot cheaper than a trip to the Emergency room or a Funeral.
 I do agree with Tim that a shotgun stub is OK for the milder pistol pressure chamberings

Maybe so Tim.
I gotta say, its gonna take a metalurgist with more than a working knoledge of firearms. Along with a good bit of proof, to convince me a thin shroud of 1/16" steel is gonna make one iota of difference one way or the other.
