WCH,  he had a flap with O'conner??  I've read most of O'conners books and really enjoyed them.

The "feud" was not covered in the books but in the magazine articles and sections authored by the two.  Elmer was an advocate of the big slow bullet (and the big fast bullet) while O'Connor was on the high velocity small bullet side.  (Elmer came to his feelings long before controlled expansion bullets were common but his findings are based on solid evidence anyway.)  Neither gave an inch when it came to what they held to be true.  Some very entertaining writing in those old magazines!  Elmer had a good deal with G&A so I doubt he was envious of O'Connors deal with OL.

I have know 3 or 4 people who were nobodys in the gun world, who walked right up to Jack O's door, knocked and were invited to talk guns and hunting for some time.  I once new a guy who grew up on a street that JO lived on, and he told me he was a nice to talk to.

I think Parker Ackley knew Keith better than anyone here, and i considered  Ackley my friend, talking with him quite a bit on the phone, by letter and visiting him several times.  Keith worked for Ackley for a time, and Parker had a lot to say about Keith most of it wasn't too flattering.

I always liked Keith, but you just had to realize he exaggerated a bit, but at least it made his stories better.

Actually, after shooting 44 mags since the 70's, i don't find Keiths fantastic shots to be all that fantastic.  Hitting a porkey at 80 yds sure isn't fantastic (i've easily taken crows, ravens and grouse further away than that with my M-29) and shooting things at 5 or 600 yards with any firearm is pretty dooable if you have enough shooting experience with THAT gun and walk your shots to the target like Keith did.

Exaggerate your stories a little, throw in a bit of luck, and anything is dooable, even with a short bbled revolver...

Drilling Man,   I called Jack back around circa 1980 when the NRA convention came to atlanta to see if he was coming so I could get a book autographed.  his wife answered with a real gravel girty voice and put Jack on the phone.  he told me he wasn't coming but he stayed on the phone and we had a real good chat.

edited to add, William, sorry about stealing another one of your threads.

Before this gets into a "Bashing of Keith"  does anyone have any definitive proof that any of the other writers don't stretch anything at all that they say or write?
Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.
Lets see who is without sin on here.
In many of the conversations I had with Elmer Keith about his exploits he was quick to say "the more a man shoots the more lucky accidents he has".  To me that was an admission that he knew his actual limitations.
I see no where that indicates stretching anything.  At least no more than probably many others including many of us on here.
How good was O'Connor with a handgun?  Anyone know?  Could he possible have been better than Keith?  Where is his handgun writings?

Meplat, I don't even know if O'conner owned a handgun.
I don't doubt that Keith was an amazing shot, after all, he did it for a long time.  I've seen Munden do some amazing things.  I used to like lachuk but I've learned a lot about him here. I'll still read his books but try to be a little more critical.
y'all have piqued my interest about Keith and I may just have to read some of his stuff.

I think magazine writers are like the rest of the population.  I have known two.  I bought a couple of guns from one guy who had written extensive reviews of them.  When I got one it was unfired, the other fired once.  Both were black powder guns and he hadn't cleaned the one he shot and it had a rusty bore. Yet he had done quite a review of them including targets he shot and a hunting story.  It was well written but pure fiction.  The other guy was the most honest, ethical person I ever worked with, and he made a little extra money writing about his hunting.  If he wrote it it happened, and just as he wrote it.

William, I just turned 67 and have had rotator cuff surgery on the shoulder of my shooting arm a few years back and I got arthritis in my shooting hand.  I also, have two .44 mags.  and I shoot a lot of .44 specials with a hand-full of factory load .44 magnums when I go to the range.  I found me a good fitting padded shooting glove and cut off just past the second knuckle on the the glove the trigger finger and social finger.  Works for me.

Shot the .41 against a .44 daybefore yesterday------ Scratch the .44 off the list.
Just not a "fun" shooter--for me.
I love the .41

Yo Dude!  You are comparing the 44 to the wrong thing!  Shoot a little 454/475/500 before you pick up that daintly little 44 and you wil appreciate it for what it is...  The finest off the shelf big bore revolver cartridge out there!   ;D

I like the .44 mag. cause I can plink with the .44 specials.  You don't have any light loads for the .41 Mag.  Shot a couple of .500 rounds one time bare handed.  My wrist hurt for a week.  Really woke Mr. A. Ritis up.  Reminded me of my TC Contender in .30-30 from years ago. Shoot a box of 20 factory loads and my hands and forearms would tingle for 3 or 4 days. Had one of those early 10" light weight bbls. on it.  Shot it bare handed cause they didn't make any of those orthopedic shooting gloves like them .500 S-W shooters wear.   ;D

.44 isnt bad at all. I personally think the .357 is worse. I wouldn't worry about it. If you "HAD" to use it recoil means nothing.

I think you are correct.
What does recoil mean----one thing to one and another thing to another.
I don't know the words to use--shooting dynamics?
If I used dynamics to say that I don't care for shooting the .40, .357sig or the .44mag maybe that would be better wording.
I could probably even say the .45 was close to those dynamics.
It is not the physical pounding, it is the dynamics of how it feels in the hands.
I dunno?

"What does recoil mean----one thing to one and another thing to another.

This is the way I see it.  If you really liked the 44 Mag you would shoot it.  Evidentally it is not to high on your shooting list or you would.  I shoot handguns that are more powerful because I like them.  I limit my amount of rounds I shoot through them though.
The 44 Mags that I have owned and shot even with 320 JDJ bullets weren't all that bad.  Even the 45/8's inch Ruger SA's with the original grip.  But that is tempered by shooting harder kicking guns.
Now with that being said when the 44 Mag was the only powerful gun I shot I thought it was something else.  Not anymore.

I have a permanent knot on my knuckle from the trigger guard and a knot on my first joint on my trigger finger where it attaches to my hand.  Now they don't get any worse.  They just stay there.
I believe this post was just something to throw out to get a conversation going which is good in and of itself.
But,  If you really liked and wanted to shoot a 44 Mag you would.  You don't and that is that is fine too.
One way to get over the 44 magnum bugaboo is to buy an Encore pistol in 45/70 and load 550 gr bullets to 1500 or so and shoot a few of them.  With that lightweight barrel and no brake everything else will seem piddling to some degree.  Then you will just love shooting a 44 Magnum.

It was not anything but myownself musing.
I can shoot it and fairly good---I can also run the Pony car at 120 MPH and fairly good.
Shooting is fun---however you determine fun to be.
I don't find it as much fun to punish myownself as some do---don't make you a bad person--also don't make you a superman.
I don't want to get used to something. Been there and done that. I just want to enjoy and not prove.

Being a "superman"  wasn't mentioned.  There is a price to pay for everything.  I pay the price because I like the big ones.
So to each his own.
The 44 mag bothering you must eat at you or you would not have even mentioned it.
I know I sure wouldn't have if it didn't.
Still it is all in your mind.  I shoot 45 Colts mostly loaded to 800 to 900 myself and enjoy then but i still like and shoot the big guns but do limit my ammo count like i said.  I am not as young as I used to be.

I agree 1000%! If you do not enjoy shooting it, why buy it?

I have a 629 and love it, but my wrists have health issues so I limit my shooting with it. My son loves to shoot it but he only shoots light loads (I think he just likes to tell his friends he shoots the .44 mag). I taught my wife to shoot, but she has a bone spur on her wrist so she can only shoots my 9mm semi-auto or .38 Specials in my 686, and about 50 rounds before she goes to only the .22's. I tried to get her to shoot my 625 45ACP but she is afraid it wil hurt, so I do not push it. I'd rather she shoot the .22's with me than not shoot at all!

I used to have 5 Mosin Nagant Russian rifles in 7.62x54r ad LOVED them, but I have tendenitus in both shoulders and bad discs in my neck, and they are kickers - even with the recoil pads I had on them. The last time I had them at the range about 8 people was interested so I let others shoot them, and ended up shooting about 100 rounds myself. An hour later I had no feeling in my wriss that lasted 3 days and pain for 7. I sold all of them and bought me a Marlin 39A .22. I miss my Mosins but love the 39A and have no regrets.

Bottom line: it is you that has to be happy with what you buy and shoot, and if the recoil from a .44 mag bothers you, then buy the .41 mag. and enjoy! It's your money, use it as you like, enjoy shooting that 41, and never look back!

Hello William Layton,
You asked for a soft shooting 44mag.  You might consder a Marlin lever action because:
1    11 rounds versus six
2    less cost than a S&W
3    I read in October you were looking for means and method to conceal carry a 12" buntline.  As crafty as you are I think you could conceal carry a Marlin lever just as easy.

I could only pull off concealing a carbine if I could pull of me being a stud---which I can't.
There are other projects in the wind now and the .44mag is not one of them.

William,  Reading through the posts i was going to suggest going with the 41mag. I could pick up 400lb parts and install them on the machines before i retired. Since i been sick i have lost about 2/3rds of my arm muscle. I had arms like popeye, now
i kind of struggle with the heavy rifles. But right now i can just handle the S&W N Frames. my point  i know the feeling. once i recover from my illness its time to hit the gym. 11czy

I'll let you read my "handle" and figure out if I'm a fan.
20 gr H110 pushing 210 Sierra Silhouette bullets have gone completely thru 2 bears (60 & 85 yds), 2 elk (50 & 80 yds) , and 50% pass thru on 2 mule deer (70 & 90 yds), and over 35 whitetails out to 115 yds.

2 - 3 screws in both barrels lengths
1- Redhawk-7.5"
1-new mod Blackhawk-6.5"

My teen daughter just started shooting "Boomer", as she has named it, recently also.

Bottom line is that if you don't enjoy shooting it ( what ever it is) you wont pick it more than once or twice.  Get something you enjoy shooting and forget any ego considerations.  The man who taught me to shoot a pistol was a motorcycle cop who had T-boned a car while on duty........both his wrists were fused and he became the Police Departments Range Master/Trick Shot expert.  He always shot .32 S & W long up to .38 spls.

William,
There are different levels of Mag.
The 240 grain Soft or Hollow point are stout.
You can then step down into the 180 grain JSP/ JHP Remington loads that have a lot of flash and boom but do not twist your wrist like the 240 grain loads.
Then you have the reduced Hunting / Self Defense loads like the Winchester 210 grain Silver tips  that are a wimpy mag.
And then you can get into  the Hot Special loads that are really comfrotable to shoot and mimic the 41 mag loads with a wider bullet.  But not that much wider.  410 Vs 429
Changing the grips can change the felt recoil.  I have two S&W N frame 44 mags, one is a 6" with smooth side target grips and the other is a 4" with round butt, wood finger grips.  The thinner the area on the back strap the more felt recoil you will have.
But I think you already have one in 45 Colt and adding a 44 mag for carry will be redundant.  The 45 colt can shoot from Cowboy action to hot loads that are equal to the 44 mag with a wider bullet and everything inbetween from Lead to Jackets huntng bullets.
