For primative weapon season I am supposed to be using a 44 mag handi, if I get it back from H & R on time.  I sent one in the middle of July for the third time.  I am supposed to receive a replacement rifle.  If I don't get it in time I guess I will just punt on the early season.

For regular gun season I will be using a new Browning X-Bolt Hunter in 7mm-08.  Have not had it in the woods yet, but it is surely a tack driver at the range.

max,
first off let me say that the following are just a general opinions of mine and is no way a personal attack to any one useing a crossbow. just saying because sometimes this topic gets heated  ;D  generally im against grown men who arent disabled or elderly using a crossbow during primative archery season. it seems in your case you qualify for this and if it gets u in the woods brother by all means quit fiddle fartin and go get one, the season will be here soon. but for all able bodied men i beleive a traditional recurve, long bow or compound should be used. secondly im not against compounds as they are more than affective weapon for deer but i think they should be used during muzzleloader or rifle seasons, if state law allows. then this brings up the argument of crossbow like a gun or not. well yes and no. no as in ballistics, trjectory, holdover, shooting through obstructions, blah blah no a cross bow isnt like a gun. and yes you have to practice with a cross bow like a bow also. some may argue with the speed, sights, and technology packed into modern compounds now a days that bows are comparable to crossbows. you may have a point in a sense, but i remind you with a cross bow you have a magnified scope, better for low light shooting than a pin sight, less movement because you dont have to move to draw, less noise because you dont have draw, so this is what i use to eliminate the crossbow from archery season. in louisiana they have made crossbows legal for anyone. so im torn, if people use the opertunity to return to hunting or get in the woods and increase hunting numbers, then i think its a good idea. but i think the only reason the state changed things was to increase revenue. more archery permits sold increase revenue for sure. so in retrospect i think theres a place for crossbows in huntin no doubt but frown on the idea of allowing them during archery season. in louisiana we have 2 archery only seasons, i think allowing them during the second season weould be reasonable.

Muzzie season....CVA Wolf, (won't have the Huntsman ready), and since I'll be on public land this year....20 ga. rifled barrel I bought from Gendoc on an SB1 frame, Simmon's shotgun scope.

If I get on some private land, either the 280 Handi or the 45-70, depending on how open it is....

Well now that I'm an Okie (by PCS) I will be using a 50cal Knight Disc Rifle on Ft. Sill land for deer and hogs. Private land I will use either my .356 Win Handi rifle  ;)  or my Win 70 30-06 built by HCR for the same. Coyotes and bobcats get harassed by my Weatherby SPM .243 Win. ;D

If I make it back to Hoosier land, it will be a .357 Max Handi rifle or the .45LC Handi!

So many choices.... :-\

Thanks, Dinny
Handi Family: 357 Max, 45 LC, 45-70, 300 BLK, 50 cal Huntsman, and 348 Win.

I didn't draw a tag this year, just as well as I moved recently and need to survive my first winter here. Next year, if I draw a tag, I will use something with a -70 or -06 stamped on the barrel. I hope everyone has a SAFE and rewarding hunt!

.44 Mag Handi & Bisley Blackhawk 7 1/2" in .44 mag.  I really want to draw blood with the Ruger,  but if that buck of a lifetime is strolling by at 100 yds... ;)
I don't think it's nice, you laughin'. You see, my mule don't like people laughing. He gets the crazy idea you're laughin' at him. Now if you apologize, like I know you're going to, I might convince him that you really didn't mean it.

Well as stated PA season is a bit away but until last week it was the handi 30-30. But I got a 25-06 barrel5 last week and man is it sweat and is a shooter. One more trip to the range and I will decide. Unless the 243 or 270 decide to shoot. Who knows close my eyes reach in the safe and grab one. I hate this problem!!

Not sure which one yet but it'll definitely be a pistol caliber single shot. Either the 357 Maxi Handi, 44 Mag CVA or 45 LC Handi. And just to throw in a wildcard... My new 45/410 Handi will be ready to go. ;)  I'm planning on using some of Doc's tricks of the trade so I'm sure it'll shoot pretty good. ;D

Well for me it will be a 22K hornet got a pot going on the closest to the eye. The K will be plenty as we are only shooting 125 yards and it is plenty accurate for the job.
This all depends on the State of Texas Not going up in smoke though.Going to be really tuff hunting this year from the reports out so far

I guess i stirred the pot... Just a few more details on the eye shots
Every one shooting are excellent marksmen with many years of precision shooting.Shooting is done from a blind with a shooting rest. (some use bench guns shooting in the teens) all shots are taken with the deer facing the shooter facing  the shooter no side shots allowed. All of the shooters are not the "Shoot the first deer wherever"I know for a fact that 3 of the shooters invited are better shots than the local SWAT team snipers and 2 are former snipers.
Hunting in Texas is much different from the north and east parts of the United States. We have a longer season and multiple deer tags, thus allowing hunters to be more selective both in the shots taken and the size of the deer.
In guiding kids for over 20 years I can tell you that a deer shot in the "vitals" will  can run a lot further than one shot in the head.We are lucky enough to hunt here mild weather and great shooting conditions,(if it gets cold we stay home or light the heater in the enclosed blinds)
If you can hit 5 aspirins at 100 yards with 5 shots and exhibit the patience necessary to make these kind of shots it is a lot of fun, if not keep up the "vital shots" and practice some more ;D

My area is mixed woods, 50yds. is a long shot in most places, and fairly thick.
Im leaning toward Ol' Ugly OverKill for the opener 'cause the deer tend to be closer than later on in the week and it is a quick gun at under 6# and open sights. Win. Foster loads will be vicious but do the job without a doubt.
Of course, this means that my opportunity will be presented at distance and through the branches where a scope would have been more surgical. Thats life.
I could happily grab the  scoped 45-70 UH, too, but it is a chunk to still hunt with.
