Got a 444!
« on: September 02, 2011, 06:54:58 PM »
The barrel was waiting for me when I got home.   :D  I checked it on my 2 remaining receivers and put a .002 shim so it would fit the sloppy one.  The JB is setting up as we speak!   8)

'course it will just be added to the list of Handi's that I haven't had a chance to shoot yet...  :-\  A 30-30, a 500 and two 280's...  I gotta get out more!   :-[

In the meanwhile, can I load the 444 with 44 Mag dies if I only neck size?   ???  Wait!  I don't have any brass!   ::)  nuthins easy....   :'(

Welcome to the group of aquirers, Richard.  I got too many that ain't been shot yet, some not even out of the box. :'(   Too many toys, not enough time.  I think yer gonna get a S--- eatin grin on yer face when ya light this one up.  I like my T4's better than my 45-70's, maybe cause I'm just a bit off plumb. :-\ ;D   I'd say to load er up and come up for a hunt, but Montana has gotten real expensive for out of state permits.  You and Kathi still need to get up here.  DP  PS, Hornady LE flextip has shorter cases than regular 444 ammo.   DP

Ya Tim, finally.  Still that lost check though.  You know, my father retired from the USPS and I remember he was quite dedicated to that service.  But, times change I guess.   :-\

OH!  And a 45 Colt BC Carbine!   ;D  I wonder if there are any more I haven't shot hiding out in the safes...  ???

OH! OH!  I also checked my shim job this morning.  Barrel and receiver are a perfect match!   ;D

Richard,

the 444M is tapered from .453 to .469 or so.  I don't load 44Mag but I think it has little to no taper.  If you get 444M brass that hasn't been proof tested you might be able to get away with a neck size only.  The shell plate you need for the 444M is also different than the 44mag so you probably need to send Mr. Lee $25 bucks for the 444M die set. ;D   Besides, when you get a price on 444M brass you will forget all about the cost of the die set. :o

When I loaded 444 (for a Marlin lever about 25yrs ago) I could 'neck size' the bullet holding top with the 44Spl die and got by, though it was futzy, for low pressure cast bullet loads. I ultimately got a 444 sizing die only and still used the Spl dies for the rest (did I tell you I was cheap?) and was glad I did.

blake,

you ain't cheap, you are resourceful. ;)   In your honor I made a "die" that allows me to seat a 209 primer in a 410 hull, using a Lee Loadall 12 gauge press.  the "die" consists of an 18 mm 1/2 drive deep dish socket, 1" thin fender washer and a piece of tape.  Works great and was the right price. ;D
