Ruger Model 77 Tang Safety, Mag. Contour Boat paddle Stock
« on: September 03, 2011, 01:30:44 AM »
A friend is looking for one of these for his 338 win.mag.. He says that some came with a wood inlay in the depression and would prefer that. Where can these be found? And approx. how much?

The M77 with a tang safety was discontinued a few years ago and replaced with the M77 MKII. The safety and trigger were changed but the rest of the rifle remained pretty much the same. I don't remember any M77 with any kind of inlay work.. so can;t help there but stocks are readily available. The auction sights and most gunshows will have stocks that will fit. Also all the stock makers (Boyds, Richards Microfit, etc) will sell stocks that will require fitting and finishing. How much that costs is too regional to say for certain though between $100-400 should cover the tab. Some will be determined by whether glass bedding is done (I strongly reccomend bedding) and the extent of checkering, if any. If looking for a utilitarian stock a Boyds laminated stock can be installed pretty easily(I believe they even have ready fit stock) and rubber pistol grip and fore end gripping surfaces can be installed by anyone. These are effective and a lot cheaper than checkering. Of course a pre-fit won't be as good a fit (usually) as a custom installed pr-carved stock and one could look at the work as a project and learing experience. A GOOGLE search will find many suppliers but I strongly reccomend Wenig Custom Gunstocks located in Lincoln Missouri. From prior experience I know they know their craft and provide a good product for the money. If you decide on this being a project we of course would be glad to help as we can. Also welcome to the gunsmithing thread!!
