45-70 Fun!!
« on: September 03, 2011, 01:06:31 PM »
I had the opportunity to go to a local range today with a few Handis. I took my 30-30, 45LC and 45-70. As you may recall, the 45-70 and 30-30 are a matched set to one dedicated receiver. They both shot exceptionally well today.

The 30-30 was sighted with the 160gr Hornady LE ammo. I found it's velocity to be very consistent with the factory ratings of 2400fps. It shot in the 2386fps range with a low spread. I have it sighted at 1.25" high at 100yds and that should do well for whatever I ask of it. The cast bullet loads I shot were clocked at 913fps. They were fun, but not as much as the 45-70 cast loads. ;)

Speaking of 45-70 finally, it shot the 325gr Hornady LEs all over the place. Since I only had 6 shells left, I didn't set-up the chronograph for them. My preferred plinking load of 11gr TB powder under a 330gr Lyman cast HP shot very well at 1025fps. It shot 1" at 50yds and 1.5" at 100yds. I have a Bushnell Trophy scope with the ranging reticle for holdover. THE MOST FUN OF THE DAY came when I sighted down on the 200yd gong. My holdover was nearly 7 feet and it would reply with a resounding ping when struck. Although it took me 15rds to adjust the Kentucky Windage, I learned something about the momentum of those large bullets. Every miss displayed a earth moving spectacle. Dirt and grass would fly for several feet in every direction when I would miss the gong and strike the berm.

Next range day I plan to dial the 45-70 in a little closer as far as the scope goes. My 100yd hold was the very bottom dot of four in my reticle. Also, I plan to switch over to 405gr cast LFN bullets for better performance on game. I would like to test it's penetration on a few hogs this year in SW Oklahoma.

Many thanks to Pete and the other devout 45-70 Handi fans for recommending this to me by their exciting posts. ;)

No mention of how the .45LC shot is due to it's boring consistent accuracy. It always shoots good now that I found what it likes. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

Dinny,

7 feet of holdover?!?!  You are lucky the bullet didn't burn up on reentry to the atmosphere. ::)   If you could find the ballastic tables the Germans used for their "Paris Gun" in WWI you would probably be all set with your TB load. ;D   Glad you had a good range day and I heard the weather in your part of the country is gettin' a little better.

BB,
And that was at 200yds. The range has a 300yd berm, but I saved that for next time. The "Paris Gun" tables will come in handy then... ;D ;D

Thanks, Dinny

It's a 335gr CP WFN in front of 16.5gr of 2400. I haven't had a chance to load anything here yet, so I'm just shooting up ammo that was loaded earlier this year before I moved. You can bet your bullets will be loaded next. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

Thanks!  I look forward to loading some more up. From what I saw of the initial ones, they will perform nicely in both the accuracy and hunting departments.  :)

Ya know Dinny, if ya keep talking like that, you're going to make me drag out the .45-70 for deer again this year.  It's not fair, she got the last one and just has to stay home and pout.  The .38-55 is going to be first out this year and I need to get working with her to finalize the load I'll use and learn it's trajectory.  Too many Handis, not enough time.  I don't know where I ever found time when I was working.

So far, I wouldn't say I have found my corner of it. I hope the cooler weather of winter and the vast hunting opportunities change my mind though. ;)

Thanks, Dinny

Dinny, I am considering either a 7mm-08 or 30-30 barrel (factory fitted) to add to my stainless  45-70 for deer hunting.  Ant advice between the two?

Robert,
I can't say anything bad about the 7mm-08. I can say that the 30-30 is awesome in the Handi rifle!  ;)

Thanks, Dinny

Dog, I like the 6.5 and 7mm's, and the 30-30 too.
You will get more in potential with the 7, but no rim. That probably wont be an issue, but.......has been for some. If I didnt have either, and had the choice, this would really attract me.
The 30-30, with the rim, if it has the range that you can work within, will be a fine cartridge. If you wanted to 'improve it' someday it would be ready, and you could even make it a 30-40Krag.
