Why didn't anyone tell me how much fun lever actions were!
« on: September 05, 2011, 02:40:45 PM »
Picked up my first lever action in a 45 70 model 1895 and it is a blast!!!  Haven't had a chance to shoot much this summer but went to the range the last 3 days in a row ;D   Adjusted the front sight with the help of some graybeard friends and now it is a point and shoot gun.  Bench work yesterday to work up a load with cast bullets.  Awesome at 50 yards off hand now but with those open sights at 100 off hand I still need a little work.  My shoulder is a little stiff but can't get the smile off my face with all those rounds gone down range.

Thank you guys for all the help!

if yu got old eyes like i do, you might look into a rear reciever mounted peep.skinner or tech sights.i just do a lot better with a rear peep. it allows you to see the sights and your target at the same time.

Damnitman, it's a secret!!! :-X   Now the price of used ones is gonna go up. :'( ;D   Do yerself a favor and get a Henry 22 lever.  Action is smooth as silk, good wood, good accuracy and cheap to shoot. 8)   Made in America and has a great warranty, it'll help the economy. :)   DP

now if your really want to have some fun find yourself a small bore like a 3220 or 357 lever gun.  Theres not much thats more fun at the range then one of them.

Lloyd nailed it there.  I have 3 lever guns, all in .357, 2 '92's and a Winnie 94.  I don't bother boxing my ammo as I load on a progressive and just dump into 100 round sandwich bags.  When I go to shoot either at home or to the range I'm always carrying at least 1 full bag of ammo and usually more. A .357 will really move a steel swinger around!

I have a custom Handi rifle in .32-20 that I love.  Yesterday, I came one click away from buying a Marlin .32-20 1894CL cut to 16 something inches with a full length mag tube.  The only thing that stopped me was I don't have anything I want to part with to cover it.  The .32-20 is a great little round.  I'm surprised they're not more popular.  I call it my poor man's .22 Mag.

Had some more range time with the 1895 :D   The more I shoot this the more impressed I am with the levers.  Now I just need to find a great deal on a 357 or 44 lever.  I would like to get something that the brass is easy to find.  This gun sure goes through a pound of lead in a hurry!

Have shot a lever Marlin Cowboy II for thirteen years in Cowboy competitions.....like it so much, that I bought an identical one about 5 years ago in case the first one broke for some reason.

Have used it Deer Hunting (.357 magnum) and have buckhorn sights for a great sight picture.  Lightweight to carry and can take down any critter that I need.  In .38/357 for SASS it is perfect.

Yeah, not only are they fun to shoot but mine are definately the most accurate rifles I own.  My .35 Remington shot MOA right out of the box, I still have a target hanging above my reloading bench of three rounds, all touching one inch above the bullseye, right where I wanted it while sighting it in before the season.  I love my levers but keep my bolt actions around because I have had them so long, sentimental fool that I am.

I love the lever action rifle. I have a Henry that's a beauty! I also have a Marlin 30-30 that I've had since before Henry came around (else that'd be a Henry!), and I've FINALLY just arranged for my first BLR! I'm anxious to get the BLR, as I've always wanted one, and love that it's a real, thoroughly modern centerfire rifle that still utilizes the very fast and distinctly American lever action. :)
