Taming an Ultra Lite 12 Guage Slugger H&R
« on: September 06, 2011, 09:29:44 AM »
Need help, info, etc. I think I made a bad decision on this gun. It is the 12 guage rifled Ultra Lite. I am forcing myself to shoot it after only 6 shots. There must/has to be a way to tone this tooth loosener down. It's recoil is worse than any 300 Win. mag. I think it's about the same as the 458 Winchester.

If I can't soon tame this guy down, it'll be up for sale/trade, etc. Holler back if you can help me. Thanks to all.

Best,

Add weight or a mercury recoil reducer to the stock bolt hole and upgrade to a good recoil pad, both are covered in the FAQs.

I dont know what yours weighs, my .727 Ol' Ugly OverKill is just under 6# now. I will not shoot it off a bench, and it is a smoothbore so less recoil than rifled.
Put another 'slip-on' pad on it and/or a better pad on the stock. I like the extra pull with the slip-on.
Shoot offhand
Dont tense up, hold it firmly but if you are 'tight' it will hurt more; roll with the recoil
Dont shoot more than 5
You are right, it is low end Africa Gun recoil  :P .

Thanks for all the help/info. Yesterday, I took the buttpad off, and filled the empty space in the stock with loose 7 1/2 birdshot. Didn't weigh it, just filled it to the brim, replaced the rubber pad. This alone makes a huge difference. Now, I am ordering a slip on recoil paid, one of the good ones. I have seen several I like the looks of in the catalogs, leather laced, and just plain slip ons. What do yall think and what you like ?

Now, I think I'm gonna conquer this ole boy. I remember ole Elmer Keith saying that if you can't handle recoil you are a sissy, something to that effect. I just don't see anything fun about shooting a gun that hurts and you have to fight off flinching and use all the self control you can muster to get this thing sighted in. I am on the road to success, now, tho.

Can't wait till I get my recoil pad in. I am using a tee shirt folded up also and tucked inside my shirt when shooting, a homemade pad, and it really helps. So far, not much luck with it outshooting my ole smooth bore Model 97, tho. I am not happy with the high dollar Hornady 300 grain Sabots, have not got a really tight group yet.

Thanks again to all of you, keep the info coming, this is one interesting project for me.

Best,

Another thing to do is shoot 2 3/4" regular (NOT MAG) shells/sllugs/sabots. Those 2 3/4" 12 guage slugs will take down any deer you come across with power to spare. As an added bonus in addittion to being easier on your shoulder they will probably shoot more accurately than 3" mags as well....<><....:)

My slip-on is one of those more pricey leather ones with the velcro, they made a few different sizes. (lucked into mine on a gunshow table for $10 or so)

I was test shooting these guns on the H&R range when they first went in production.  Kicked like all get out but if you can handle the recoil they shoot very well.  Every one of them shot super with the Remington Buckhammer slugs.  Once you get your gun sighted in with the load you like you'll be all set.  They carry well when out hunting and when you pull the trigger on game it will be like shooting a .22.  I was probably shooting about 50 rounds a day with these guns.  I found that to take the recoil I had to completely focus on making the shot and just let the recoil happen.  The gun I found the worst to shoot was the 3.5 in. 12 ga. turkey gun with 2 oz. turkey loads.  I generally could only shoot 6-8 rounds at a session with them.  For some reason Brian56 always seemed happy to have me test them when he had one in for warranty work.

Mine likes the 2 3/4" Rem. copper solids and the Win BRI slugs, probably groups a little better with the Rem. These both kick pretty hard, but not nearly as bad as the Win. supremes. I held the gun wrong once with them and ended up with a black and blue spot that went from my neck to my elbow!   I fit a Pachmayer decelerator to my stock and that made a world of difference.
