It looks like a home made hornet trap.

Appears to be just that, although I first thought it had a fuse coming out the top instead of a wire.  Thought Myron had come up with something spectacular for a minute.   ;D

the bottom is painted orange mainly so the openings in the sides of the bottom (cut about an inch above the bottom) are more visible, but also to add color as a visual attractant.   another bottle is top cut off and stuffed into the bottom creating an upside down funnel, similar to a minnow trap with the small opening pointed up.
bait, which is anything the little nastys seem to like is put in the bottom.   they enter through the holes in the lower bottom of the bottle, to get the bait.  this is where the black tape comes into play.   with the sides taped up, it is darker in there, and they fly up toward the bright when they want to leave.  up, up, up, threw the funnel top, into the upper chamber where they are stuck.   unless they climb downward through the center of the cut off bottle in the middle, they are stuck.
i will make another one tommorrow and take pictures of the process as i am sure that will be alot easier to understand.   it worked great today.  yesterday, the hornets were so thick, i couldnt stand still.   today, not a one buzzing around. they went straight for the trap and that was that.    ;D     i wish i could take credit for thinking it up, but i used an idea my grandfather had and modified it using different materials and design.   the concept is the same.

MM3-
You made that a lot more complicated than it needs to  be. Take a pop bottle (or gatorade)with a little bit of pop left in it and cut the top of the bottle off right where the curved top ends and the cylinder  starts. Put the top upside down into the bottom and watch the action.

I thought the same thing at first. I may try this around a yellow jacket nest. The nest is under the base of a tree and I don't want to kill the tree. Poison hasn't done much good. If this don't help I may think about the fuse thing again ;D .

MIRAGE. Thats simple enough. I'm going to try that with a 2 liter. Seems that everything with stingers gets aggressive this time of year. I've killed a lot of them just putting a gal jug on the porch with something sweet in it, your idea sounds really good.

For a ground nest have you tried Sevin Dust Put a liberal amount on the entrance and they will get it on them and carry it in to the queen. Once the queen is dead they will leave the nest.

I have put all kinds of poison in and around the hole. They are deep in and under the root base. The poison has slowed them down but hasn't killed them all.

Put a bucket of water near the nest entrance with just a couple drops of Dawn detergent. Add detergent after the bucket is about 1/4 full and don't stir it.  Have some patience. This does not get them overnight, but it does get them!

Have you tried gasoline down the hole, then lighting it?? I've used that successfully. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Under the caps of our ubove ground pool we were always killing yelow jackets or they were getting us. If the nest was just under the side rails I would just go out after dark and grab the nest and put it in a ziplock. This year just to give it a try I went around the pool and put a couple mothballs under each cap and we've had no bee's. Whether that worked or not I don't care as long as their gone.

well, a few observations.   cutting the top off and inverting it worked, but not nearly as well as the other one i made.   the biggest problem i have is keeping people/dogs from messing with it.   i think i am going to make one like grandpa made, because while sitting back and observing, lots of bees visited but didnt make their way into the trap.   with grandpas design, if they stopped by, they usually didnt leave.  he made his out of wood and screen, and it is on the to do list for this week.  i will take pictures as i go.

I take an old milk jug.  Glue several pieces of plastic tubing through it (got at the craft store).  Before gluing in place, cut holes in the tubing to let the insects get to the bait, no closer than two inches from the outside of the jug.  (Touching the tubing with my grinder does a good job cutting the holes).  once the tubing is in place and glue dries, cut tubing flush with outside of jug.  Place about 1/4" Orange juice, any sweet juice will work, in bottom.  Put top on jug and hang near nest.

Have used small 16.9 plastic water bottles, so any type of plastic jug or bottle will work.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.
