Drill & tap for scope
« on: September 08, 2011, 08:18:20 AM »
I have everything to drill and tap for scope mount on my handi 20 gauge but stopped because I am not sure the 20 gauge is thick enough, .210 th.. Can I drill through holes and clean up after setting screws? OR can I go .125 blind hole and be ok? I know there are 20 gauge handis with scope mounts but I don't have one to look at. Any help will be appreciated.

Mike, through holes are not the way to go. Blind holes is/are the way to go. With the exception of the bead or front sights on shotgun barrels. Might want to post this on the handy-rifle section on this board, I'm sure you will get an answer. I'm think safety here. Frank

I second the blind holes.. Thru holes are likely not a problem in the low pressure environment of a shotgun but I am not sure.. I do know that those holes would sure create a rough chamber and in these little single shots are sure to lead to ejection problems..

Thanks to all. I will go blind hole .125 deep. I didn't think pressure would be a problem on 20 gauge but had second thoughts when I got ready to do the job.

After you get it drilled and taped you may want to use JB Weld to for extra strength to secure it to the barrel, even a 20 ga has recoil if you are using heavy loads and them scopes will leave a mark if they come  off

You could always solder a base on.
