Checked velocity on several store brands of 30-06
« on: September 08, 2011, 11:35:49 AM »
I took a terrible fall last deer season with my BAR 06. Yesterday I went to the range and a guy had a chrony I shot severaL brands of 06 150 grains in my bar which has a 20" bbl.

    Winchester power points 2860 fsp

     Federal high shock  2880

     Remington core lock 2850

     Handload 42 grns of 4064 for 2925

Thr rifle shot just fine and would shoot 3 shot groups of 3" at 300 yds. Not bad for an off the shelf bar with 20" bbl.

I would say which ever ammo did this 3" at 300 then that is what I would use in it and I think it is good to go!!!  ;)

even a 06 at way less velocity than what yu post with that bullet should easily kill deer out to 300 yrds. i don t really go for velocity anymore but what i get the best groups with.i ran sum hot loads of a untried bullet thru my 06 tonite, they were way less accurate at 125 yrds than my older milder load at the same distance.its all about what your gun likes.velocity means nothing when opposed to shot placement.

CB, what this shows me is that with all the years and all the product development behind the '06 the major brands pretty well have the kinks worked out.  And you obviously have a well made BAR.  Congrats.

is this correct? I am loading 52 grains in my '06. Haven't checked speed, but it is said to be around 3,000.

Remember I'm using a 20" bbl it really suprised me that factory loads were pretty close. I use the federal Hi-shock 150 grn for deer hunting, I don"t know why I use the BAR because most deer I've shot is one and down.and I have a lot of confidrence in that rifle.

Country Boy, on paper a 20" barrel would give up about about 80 FPS as compared to a 24" barrel at your velocities.

Since there can be a fair difference between the readings of two similar chronographs when checked side by side the velocity readings may not be dead on.  My experience is that short of something like a Oehler 35 that chronograph readings are better looked at as comparative data and not as absolute fact.

You've got a good shooting rifle.  Good luck hunting.

You are right it is 52 grns of 4064. This Bar shoots very good. When they see the results, a lot of guys have tried to buy it from me but no sale. Thanks for all your kind words.

My understanding  Browning BAR 30-06 all came with 22" barrels the 308 had 20" barrel.

My go to load for the 06 with 150 gr bullets has been 51.2 grs IMR 4064 and a friend of mine just rounds it off at 52 grs. This load usually shoots lights out in most 06 rifles. Your velocity is spot on within 50 fps or so from what I have gotten in 22" barrel rifles. The most accurate stock semi-autos I have seen are the BARs hands down.

I pick accuracy over velocity every time.

30-06 Springfield using 150 grain bullets 52.0 grains of IMR-4064 is over maximum charge according to Hodgdon the manufacture of IMR-4064 shows 51.0 grains as the maximum, but Nosler reloading data shows 52.0 grain at maximum.

I always follow the powder manufacture data over everyone else, so I would back down to 47 grains and work up to 51 grains is it were my hand loads to find the most accurate load.

http://www.nosler.com/Reloading-Data/30-06-Springfield-150-Grains.aspx

Unless you are using Accurate 4064 then 52.5 grain is maximum.

The most accurate hunting load for my 30-06 Springfield Ackley Improved happens too be 54.0 grain of IMR-4350 for a 150 grain bullets, which is the minimum load data according to data.hodgdon.com

As long as accuracy is good enough, i pick the BEST BULLET for the job every time.

If the bullet i like is accurate enough, i won't switch brands just because some other brand is more accurate.

Like you I got a real shooter, and though I have not tried groupings at the distance you have, it does better than I can. I do not believe that it has ever had a factory round fired in it. I have used the 165 gr. SPBT for many, many years and had excellant success with it. It sits over 3031 and shot through either mine or my two sons rifles, has taken many deer effectively. I believe the rifle to be a real testament to John Moses and the company that makes them.
