Sling Info Please
« on: January 06, 2004, 10:04:45 AM »
I want to switch from using a holster to a sling for my Encore. I currently have the black rubber grip and forend. My questions are: How do the sling studs/swivels attach to the gun, do I need to change to a wood grip/forend, where is the best source for the hardware and sling. Thanks so much for your input.

I bought my Encore sling mounting hardware here:
http://www.tjgeneralstore.com/accessor2.htm
You can see in the photo what it comes with, up front it mounts with a barrel band (you can use whatever forend you like).  In the back you replace the grip cap with the one shown, and use the longer bolt provided.  What sling are you planning on using?  I have been curious about trying the "Just Sling It" sling, but ended up with a standard TC sling for the time being.

i use a standard 1" or 1 1/4" nylon sling. it's called a a super sling, and made by outdoor connection. it adjusts very easily, adjusts short enough to wrap over your left elbow for a offhand shooting aid, and comes in a few different camo colors.
encore- i install a sling stud out in the tip of the walnut forend, and another into the walnut grip. needs to be carefully drilled to prevent splitting.
contender- i install a machine threaded sling stud as replacement for the front forearm attachment screw, and another wood screw type into the walnut grip.
the one contender i have with pachmayers, has a long stud for grip bolt relacement, but was already installed when i got it. i replaced the single forearm attachment screw with a machine threaded sling stud.

Cheapest place  for sling mount is Fox Ridge. They are made by Uncle Mikes but T/C has exclusive rights.  Only problen with barrel band is it won't stay tight and slips.  For JSI sling got to  Virgin Valley, Bullberry , E A Brown or direct.     www.jsi-guns-hunting-firearms.com

Switched from holsters to sling about 10 years ago and have never regreted it.  A little over a year ago I switched to the "just sling it" sling and heartly reccomend it to anyone.  It has a lightning fast adjust buckle to go from short carry mode to long shooting mode in a second.  After a little practice I could bring my pistol to shooting position while changing to the longer length as fast as I could with my old sling already adjusted.  If you've never shot a pistol supported with a sling, it requires a length that when dropped back to carry position allows the pistol to hang at or even below the hip which makes it bounce around when walking.  It was a better idea that really works!!!  GOOD SHOOTIN',  Walt  :D

Slings sound interesting.  Do you carry your gun on your firing side or cross draw?  Also does the gun sit upside down or does it stay in firing position?

Up side down on my off side.  I'm right handed, so the pistol rides under my left arm, barrel pointed to the rear.  GOOD SHOOTIN',  Walt :)

same way, except hanging under my right arm. also, with the sling shortened up, i hang it over the back of my neck. the gun lays on my chest, does not swing and flop around, and is fairly comfortable. i rode double on a 4 wheeler this way some also. worked excellent. :D
