Couldn't stand it any longer...
« on: September 09, 2011, 07:04:58 PM »
Just picked up a NS Ser. .223, standard ejector barrel.  No sights.  Seller was nice enough to wait til I got paid today.  Swore I was done for the year.  I'd ask for help, but know I won't get it here.

FAQs talk about 1in12 and 1in9 twist.  I am 'ass-uming' this early gun has 1in12 so 55gr is max bullet weight for this barrel.??

No pics.  Looks like any other Handi; for now..!

Ammo's cheap though.  Don't plan on reloading this one.

Now I got eight rifles and three 20 ga.  Cheaper by the dozen means I gotta get one more.  Bakers dozen means two...  Oh, well, I guess I don't need a boat this year.  Not sure I can afford to hunt around here either.  Range is down the road so you know where I'll be after breakfast tomorrow.

Be Well...

Think as if you LIFE depends on it... IT does..!  Be Well...

If it is a 1:12", generally the max bullet weight is 55-62grs depending on the bullet's ogive profile.   The bullet length is what matters, not so much the weight.   For the slower twist, if you keep velocities up 55gr wont be a problem.  I shoot 50gr and 52gr slugs out of my 1:12" with good results.

Do I remember right that the WIn. 'White Box' has been a good choice in these?
(thought I filed that in room 12, 2nd cabinet, 1st drawer.......just in case I ever got one, but I cant find it now.......)

Yeap those WWB 45gr JHP's are awesome in the 1-12' 223's. Took me a while to best them with my handloads, but I finally did with Varget, 50gr V-Max's and 52gr Matchkings. Wish I could buy the WWB 45gr pills to reload though :-\
They really tear up ground hogs!  Still it's the best factory load for my 223 Handis.
Enjoy your 223 Tom, It's one of my favorites.
