.38-55 POI
« on: September 10, 2011, 06:42:53 AM »
My Handi 18 inch .38-55 is going to work hard this fall.  It'll be my primary "deer rifle" so this morning, I decided to start from scratch with it at 50 yards and go out from there.

I'm working with two loads:

260 gr. LFNGC over 28.5 gr. RL7 ~1725 fps.

213 gr. bonded bullet over 38 gr RL7 ~2200 fps.

Both loads are shooting sub MOA at 50 yards.  I made a couple of minor scope adjustments to bring the 213s center in the 10 ring.  The 260's are shooting exactly three inches high.  I quit for the morning at that point because it was getting hot and windy.  This evening, or in the morning I'll move out to 100 and adjust to 1.5 inches high with the 213a and see where the 260's are going.  Then it'll increments out to 300 to learn the drop.  I believe at some point both loads will have the same POI.  Is that a correct assumption?

Tim, I was just going to PM you to ask for the guy's name and address so I can get more.  I know the price will be up, but the work put into it is well worth it.  For giggles I just tried it on the 300 yard gong....one shot....Klang.  I tried a couple with the lead bullet. I think it is shooting low, but I can't tell for sure.  I'm gonna try to find the BC for both and run them through the calculator to see what comes up.

Run them through the calc..........?
I prefer the dirt berm or a big enough target paper (staple up two, one below the other) and a good spotter so I can pay attention to my benchin'. You gotta verify that calc. on paper anyway so why not just skip that step? (I know, ya got it so why not use it.......plus it gives ya somthin' ta do after dark up there....)

They may but it will be way out there. recoil is causing the heavier to hit higher and your going to have to find where the drop rates will cross.

Pete,

That fellow from Wisconsin thinks anybody with a computin' machine is from the future. ;D   He does make a good point on verifying the POI unless of course  you are huntin' virtual whitetails.
