m96 swedish mauser
« on: September 10, 2011, 10:26:42 AM »
I am looking to shorten my reload homework for my 1913 m96 sweed!
All hands on experience well be welcome (not theory)!
My list of components are as follows:

hodgdon H4831
CCI 200 Large Rifle
once fired priv par Brass
Hornady Interlock 140grain GR SP
DIES at my exposal are as follows:
LEE COLLET two die set (neck size only are not)?
LEE factory crimp (crimp are not)?
LEE RGB two die set (length to seat off lands)?

What worked best for you in this cal. and model firearm?
My Rifle is at least 90% with a really good bore, first time out I shot a 4.5in 5 shoot group at 200yrds w/ open sights on bags. All with 139grain SP priv part factory ammo.

If you are going to be shooting through the magazine you will not be able to reach the lands with the bullet. Load to magazine length. I load mine to 3.050 and it works through the magazine perfectly and is accurate at that length with most everything I have tried.

I have had best luck with 37.8 grs IMR 4895, CCI BR2 primers, 140 gr Sierra Match King, Rem cases, OAL 3.050 as a target load. This is a mild load but it is very accurate.

For a really accurate MAX 46,000 CUP range load that the Swede M-96 is listed for that I use for deer hunting etc.

Accurate Arms 4350 45.0 grs, Federal 210M Match primer, Rem case,  140 Hornady SP or Sierra SP, OAL 3.050 will do 2800 fps from the 29" barrel of M-96.

Accurate Arms 4350  46.0 grs, Federal 210M Match primer, Rem case, 120 Nosler ballistic tip, OAL 3.050 will do 3000 fps from 29" barrel of M-96.

Both of the loads are MAX according to Accurate Arms manual but they are really accurate and they hammer deer. I have four M-96s and one M-38/96. One of the M-96s has been sported with a Bold trigger, scope mounted in Leupold base and rings, new bolt handle welded on and a composite stock that I do some hunting with.

I have virtually the same rifle you described.  "Shot" has named some good loads and his advise "squares" with my measurements to the "lands"; 3.050 seems to be the "optimum" length for "flawless" operation. Since the gun was originally loaded with a 156gr bullet for its twist of 1:7 1/2, I've had good luck using 160RN Hornady over 43.0gr of AA4350. I have also had accurate loads using RL22 with a 140SBT (Sierra), or a 129gr Hornady.  Another powder I use is IMR3031 with 120Spt. (Sierra) and IMR4895 with a 140gr bullet of any brand. I've not had good luck with 4831 of either manufacturer in my rifle. The "Swed" is one of the most accurate military rifles I have ever owned! I also have a CZ in 6.5x55 that will take more pressure, but I seldom find the need to load it above "Swed speed"; it's just a nice, pleasant and effective round to shoot!

Thank you for the good advise so fare. I do have the other powders listed and will juggle a little.
Crimp are not?
M primers a most?
A lot of rifles have that isue with the magazine our just being able to eject a none fired cartridge. So I think there will be no flirting with the lands (that stinks).
Please keep the info coming, any will be great!
I am learning allot without even starting yet!
I will bump it when I start loading
THANKS to all

As for the Lee Factory Crimp Die the Swede is the only caliber that I DID NOT get better accuracy by using it in the long throat military rifles. I could tell no difference between using it and not using it in the Swede.
