5/8" bore signal cannon~
« on: September 10, 2011, 02:40:11 PM »

Finished up the little carriage fro this signal cannon......I probably will give it back to my fatherinlaw....he gave me the barrel, and has shot it with lead balls :o :o :o
I told him NO!....it isn't steel, but a cast metal type.....a 'door stop' at best, MAYbe a small charge for noise only!! anyway....I made it...now HE can paint it!

kaintuck,

I like the carriage, but is the barrel cast iron, or some kind of white metal?
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

kaintuck , will he do it agian ? Will some son of get hurt years from now . When you say "cast" and "not steel" :'( ........... It isn't worth the risk . That should be secured as a door stop and with a barrel full of lead or zinc.

Make or buy a good gun . JMHO

Sounds like boiler plate sometimes ,but when you think about it these things will out last us all . Sooner or later .....something bad will happen .

BTW I do like the carriage ! It has a tall VOC type look . High enough to service but still a small gun .

I believe that Barney Cannons Inc. So. Bend Ind. later became South Bend Replicas, Inc., maybe sometime in the late 60's (I'm not sure of the date). A very similar cannon model is still made by SBR; it has a 5/8 inch bore, and it's called the 'Continental', but I don't know if the barrel that kaintuck is showing is the same barrel that OldSalt1841 posted a photo of.
OldSalt's cannon is cast iron with a steel liner, just like the present day SBR Continental model.

They are not the same manufacturer... look at the breach face on each gun the Barney/SBR is flat compaired to the first photo ....also if you look at the moldings Barney/SBR are finer in detail.
Mr president I do not cling to either my gun or my Bible.... my gun is holstered on my side so I may carry my Bible and quote from it!

kaintuck,

I'm also fairly certain that your father-in-law's barrel isn't a "Barney" cannon. See if a magnet is  attracted to it, then at least you'll know if it's made of iron, and not some type of pot metal.
