200gr ftx in whelen
« on: September 11, 2011, 11:53:00 AM »
Im working on a reduced load for a 35 whelen using 200 gr hornady ftx bullets and H4895

I weighed 10  fired cases filled to the base of the bullet seating depth
(hornadys data says 60%+ of max case volume) at 65% I get a load of 37.5 grains
is there any way to calculate pressure or estimate FPS from a 22" barrel for this load?

Not the answer you want but I load 50gr of IMR 4895 and the 200gr FTX in my 350 rem mag (20" barrel) and get 2150fps. If you want less velocity than that I'd get the Hornady 180gr single shot pistol bullet.

Depending on COL, 1700-1800fps is predicted by QuickLoad software, a mid level velocity in the 35 Rem, so it should have decent terminal performance.

thanks guys, I was looking for 2000fps levels and needed to know if the charge I came up with was safe.
Ill start there and work upward at 1 grain till I get there and refine from there.
these seat to a COL of 3.10 crimping in the cannelure with trimmed brass

IMHO I'd try at least 46gr of powder to get 2000fps. Go to Hodgdon's online data and compare the 35 Whelen to the Rem 350 mag.

QL predicts 42gr H4895 will get you 2007fps @ a COL of 3.10".

Not 60%+ of max case volume.

Hornady's rule is 60% with H4895. By taking the maximum charges with any given catridge and multiplying it by 60%.

Your starting load is 57.0 grains maximum times 60% equals 34.2 grains of H-4895 with a 200 grain bullet for the 35 Whelen, so your load of 37.5 grains is safe.

you guys are great, thanks for the info.

Im trying to work up a light recoiling deer/hog load thats good for 150/200 yard ranges.tho most of my shots are less than a 100
my standard load of a 225sgk over 56.5gr of RL 15  is a bit much for the busted  shoulder to take more than a few at a time and it doesnt take that much firepower to kill a whitetail or a  hog.
this is why I reload, I can take what is for all intents and purposes a very large/dangerous game cartridge and down load it to something managable out of a 7lb handi rifle  that wont require a trip to the therapist after a shooting session. or make the 270 shoot little tiny  groups at 300 yards if Im having a good day at the range.

In your opinion would a 200 gr Hdy SP not work at the MV and Range you indicate?

probably would but these are used in 35 rem so they should expand better at lower velocities plus I got a deal on 200 of them when a local shop got out of the reloading stuff.

got a #5 of re22  and 400-.277/130 sierra pro hunters also,  ill be shooting for a while ;D
sadly the #8s of h4895  were all gone.
