Eabco barrels?
« on: September 11, 2011, 03:33:09 PM »
Considering ordering a barrel form them.  They have 3 of the chamberings I'm considering in stock so no wait.  Wondering if anyone here has ordered from them and what I can expect in the accuracy department.  It's a part of the Standard Encore Accuracy Barrel line.

Seriously considering the .260.  Although the 6.5x55 is also very tempting; both for white tail.

How do the barrels I'm looking at compare to stock barrels?  I don't want to wait any longer than I have to for a barrel, and if it comes to it I might just pick up a closely related more common caliber and put this project off for a little bit.

Thank you.

Gdbyrd,
There really is no different in the balistics of the 2 rounds you ask about. I would go with the 260 because you can make brass out of any of the 308 line of cartridges. 243 being the easiest to use.
As far as time frame, I've never ordered a barrel from him but everything else has been shipped promptly.  ;)

I don't know if the situation is still the same but back when they were a paid advertiser on this site they didn't make the barrels they sold for the Contender and Encore but bought them from another custom maker. I learned this from that custom barrel maker not for Eben.

From my personal experience if you are getting a chambering that TC makes you are better off to just buy a TC made barrel and save the custom barrels for rounds TC doesn't chamber. Ed's TCs is a GBO Sponsor who specializes in TC Contender and Encore stuff and might be the largest such dealer in the nation.

GBO Sponsor Midsouth Shooters Supply also stocks factory barrels. I'm not sure if SSK or MGM also GBO sponsors stock factory barrels or not these days. Both are custom barrel makers and actually make their own barrels. They are better to deal with than EAB as well.

I had done some searching and read on other sites that the owner can be difficult to deal with, and gets especially grumpy when asked about who makes his barrels.  Had no idea Midsouth was a sponsor, I spend quite a bit of money there when deer season starts to roll around.

I can't make up my mind.  I'd like to start using my encore this year as a rifle so I need to pick up a barrel/stock.  I really want something different than your normal variety 243, 270, 308, 3006 that everyone seems to run around with.  But as I'm thinking about it, it may be too late in the year already.  I don't get out to the range THAT often.  And buying a brand new caliber that's totally new to me, having to reload, working up a load, etc.  So for now it may make more sense to pick up something generic I can buy ammo for locally and save the custom stuff for next year.

Uh yeah that's kind of an understatement but I won't go into that here. ;D

They have been a sponsor here for several years now. They have four banners in the rotation. I've been buying from them since shortly after they opened for business I think. I know I was buying from them back in the early to mid '80s. Good folks to deal with and good prices. I was very pleased when they agreed to become a sponsor here. I like having sponsors I can speaking glowingly of from personal experience.

Gdbyrd,
I know you seem locked in on a 6.5 caliber and they are good.  I have the 6.5x55 myself.  But if your still open to calibers let me offer up the 35 Whelen.  You can get factory TC barrels in this caliber, they are accurate and this caliber is a sledge hammer on game.  I have two Encore frames and have had as many as seven different caliber barrels for them.  I sold them when I realized that after putting the Whelen barrels on them I completely quit using the others.  I have used mine from Miss. to Canada on deer, hogs and bear.  They are different, not everybody has one, but the ammo is available in factory loads from several sources.  My handloading uses three bullets; 200 gr. Hornady SP, 225 gr. Nosler BT and Barnes 225 gr. TSX.  Good luck with what ever you choose and please post your results for all of us to see.

+1 1/2 on difficult  ::)   (I too know who made his barrels at one time anyway - no idea now though).

For custom another board sponsor would be my first pick to have make me a barrel, SSK.

Used barrels, Ed is a real stand up man that is a pleasure to deal with, and if he doesn't have it he will try to find it.

Midsouth has been my first choice for mail order for many years.   Great company with good service and often best prices.

There are some great sponsors on this site to deal with if you can.

Yep, the owner is a #$%#....not a nice guy.  He's not very smart either.  I asked him about making a threaded barrel for me to use with one of my cans.  He said he did not have a class 3 license.  I tried to explain that there is no license to thread a barrel, but he would not listen.

Order the caliber you want.  You may end up with some information regarding EABCO that all of us could benefit from.  I've done business with them and have no issues although I haven't bought a barrel there.
I have 260's and love them.  I believe it is a great whitetail caliber and is wonderfully accurate.

Ah, I already ordered from a barrel maker.  I'm usually one to go off of someone elses experiences though.  I got burned by that once before in not taking other peoples advice.  I may still order from the company, but it's going to be as a last resort and it's going to be after an email and a phone call to verify things and I will be paying with credit card so I can dispute it if I have to.

It's a shame that people don't have customer support/care any more.  The issues may have been very isolated, but word certainly gets around.

On a side note I REALLY REALLY wanted to get that caliber, but I ended up getting something that'd shoot a little flatter.  Someday I'll have a 6.5 though.

I wussed out and went with a 270 weatherby mag.  I have a Shepherd scope laying around that I need to put on a rifle and I had to find a caliber that'd match up ballistically, and the 270 Bee matches it about perfect.

On another note!  I called Revolution stocks today looking for a stock for my Encore.  They said that I should give Eabco a call as they're one of their dealers.  The lady went on to say that she speaks with the them frequently and they're excellent to deal with...so who knows.  Maybe they're wonderful when things go right, and not so wonderful when things go wrong.

They were just ordering barrels from T/C Custom shop. When asked how much to d+t for open sights i got 5 different answers and alot of BS, after 4 emails and 2 phone calls.  I really wanted to do businnes with a Minnesota based company, seeing as i live here. I told them; couldnt handle your UNKNOWING and UNCARING ATTITUDE and REMARKS. Its a shame cause they have some things you just cant find anywhere else.  Todd

I just have to put my 2 cents worth in here.  Anytime someone is considering a 6.5x55 or a 260, I have to say the 6.5 does everything the 260 does, but with less pressure.  That is important to me. If you were talking about a bolt action, the 260 fits a short action, the 6.5 does not, but in the encore it does not matter.  Otherwise, there is no firm right answer, just a matter of taste.  Good shooting.  Wallacem in Ga

I shoot and load both the 260 and 6.5x55 Swede.
In a short action rifle the 260 is great- a Rem Model 7 is a great lightweight deer Rifle.
I essentially consider the Encore a long action rifle but is a compact form since you need no room for the bolt to operate.
Therefore I usually go with long action cartridges in the Encore- they usually give you more case/powder capacity for higher velocity with heavier bullets.
Many of the powder manufacturers now list two versions of load data for the 6.5x55 Swede- one for the weaker Mauser and one for the stronger commercial action.
I shot all three- the 260, the 6.5x55 Military Pressure Level and the 6.5x55 Higher Commercial Level- love all three.
But for the Encore I would go with 6.5x55 Commercial Level.
6.5x55 Swede brass is easily obtained (Lapua, Remington).
I think you will enjoy which ever you get.

Ditto, Iliwew, the Swede will comfortably handle the heavier weight rounds better than the .260. You just can't go wrong w/a 6.5 X 55. There's a reason it's been around for so long.  Who cares about a long action? It's a moot point w/a single shot like a TC Encore. It's just a super efficient round, with a bonus:  LOW RECOIL! Most any cartridge will do the deed w/any animal. Trajectories don't vary that much. Why beat yourself up with a heavy cartridge that, in the end, you'll wish you had a milder recoiling round.  The Swede is one of the most sensible cartridges around. Period.  You do your part, and the round will not let you down. And, in the Encore platform,......  need we say more? get yourself an SSK or MGM barrel, and you're set for an accurate, mild, and deadly cartridge for most anything you want to hunt. And, in a relatively lightweight package you can carry around all day long, without getting tired.
