New Scope !
« on: September 12, 2011, 02:56:45 PM »
My fiancée gave me a scope for my recent birthday. (Emailing your wish list can work wonders !)
She got me the new 2-7x33 matte Redfield. It is the highest quality scope I have ever owned. I have always wanted Leupolds on a Bushnell budget. I figure this is as close as I'm gonna get.
The scope just feels like quality - everything. Hope to get it mounted soon and report back on actual quality.

Marry her....quick.
The difference between people who do stuff and people who don't do stuff is that the people who do stuff do stuff.

A relative of mine and I do quite a bit of shooting and discussing everything gun related. He checked into my new Redfields and inquired at Leupold about the optics, price and mechanicals between the Rifleman and VX1's vs the new Redfield line. This is what he found out and emailed me. He was somewhat skeptical but now has some Redfields as well.

The cost savings come from the separate assembly line. The build time on the Redfield is reduced a bit due to the simplified guts. They are so simplified that the custom shop reticles and turrets cannot be installed. Also the parts are more simply shaped and not as nicely finished and anodized.

The guys at Leupold tell me that internally, the Redfields are more like the Vari X scopes they made 30 years ago. They also tell me they are about the toughest hunting scopes they make because of that.

Frankly, I feel the Redfields are a hell of a deal for a Leupold made product . Based on my direct comparisons against VX-1 glass, there is NO WAY I would spend any money on a gold ring scope over a new Redfield until I got to a VX-2 level scope. <<End of his comments>>   And yes like Pow Pow says, marry that girl.

Congratulations watkibe, I would say that your fiancee is a keeper.

Used to be that when I would purchase a new scope (usually a Weaver) I would follow the recommendation of centering the recticle within the tube. This was some tedious work as the Scope was laid across some 'U" shaped cutouts on either side of a shoe box. The scope was then turned round n round while peering through it and the adjustments were used to correct that lopsided wagon wheel.

Today is different as you just have to place a mirror flat against the Objective "or front" lens. You can then see two sets of crosshairs "one real and one ghost" and you can then simply line them up for the centering. You may have known this already and I only mention it to enhance the maximum quality of your scope.

P.S. I would not be real suprised if you found that your Scope had already been centered at the factory!...this seems to be getting more common these days.

Glance - Redfield proudly announces in the ops manual that the scop is shipped in a centered position. There are tiny rings with a bit taken off one end. You can rotate these rings so they show where "true" center is ! Neat idea !
