multiplicity of topics from a wandering mind.........
« on: September 12, 2011, 06:40:44 PM »
Working on my deer load for this year, which at this point will probably be 20gr of Blue Dot and a 440 gr Lee cast in my 500 S&W. While scouting for sign today I covered about 100 acres and discovered 40-50 armadillo dens and saw a half dozen of the little buggers scuttling about in broad daylight, they are taking over the place. The amount of digging is incredible. I need to develop an armadillo gun/ load immediately, which would seem to be my 357. Upon returning to my truck I had this uneasy feeling that I was not alone, just an undefinable itch.........and rediscovered why I hate the woods in summer. I peeled down to my fruit of the looms and discovered several hundred little friends had joined me for dinner, with me AS the main course. I made the drive home in record time, about 20 minutes. The wife went over me with duck tape, like cleaning lint off a suit. I looked like I had been sprinkled heavy with pepper all over, literally hundreds of seed ticks. Duck tape, shower and scrub brush, double allergy pills, and benadryl cream with a paint roller. Which brings me back to "what armadillo loads do you recommend???

Don't have an armadillo load, but have a recommendation to prevent ticks from joining you for dinner next time in the woods.  ;) I've been using Sawyer's military soak version of permethrin  for several years, it will kill a tick within a few minutes of it crawling on your clothing and lasts ~ 6 washings/weeks with one application,  and it's odorless from the getgo. You only treat your clothing, not skin....great stuff. I also wear tick gators to keep em from crawling up my boots.  The first time I got a tick on my pant leg, I watched the tick, after a few minutes of crawling slowly up my leg, it just fell off!  ;D

Thanks for the link! I will be getting some of that stuff. For some reason biting insects just love my blood, my wife can walk beside me and within 50 feet I will have a cloud around me while she goes untouched. I have to use that 40% DEET stuff before dressing, then on the inside of my clothes, then outside, and pin one of those dryer sheets to the bill of my cap if I really want to keep 'em away. It just about keeps me out of the woods until frost, I just fish or play golf until then.

I wonder if this product is substantualy different that the spray I have used on my horses for years.Bought by the quart in concentrated form,it is very cost effective.  G66

armadillo loads, CCI .22 long rifles in an H&R  top break model 999

+100 on the permethrin, I use it on my henessy hammock to keep the skeeters away(they will sting thru the fabric BTW  unless you treat it or use a bottom blanket)  after a soaking I let it dry before climbing in. and dont have skeeter bites for months

Way back when I lived in the Piney Woods Of East Texas (Lufkin) my neighbor ( who worked for the Texas A&M Farm) told me to wear flea and tick collars for large dogs around the Outside of my boots and tuck the pants legs inside them.It has worked for me for 30 plus years.
As a side note  I asked him how long they lasted....... He smiled and said "you will know when to change them" ;D
Them Red Bugs of East Texas are VICIOUS critters and always go for the Tender spots of the body

I believe that Permethrin is one of those chemicals/compounds that isnt supposed to be applied directly to the skin, and that you are supposed to wash thoroughly after handling anything with it on. Not to mention, scratching your nose or rubbing your eyes.........
Or am I remembering wrong?

I bet a trail boss load in either the .357 or 500 would be very effective on one of those little armoured critters.  That pest control trips shooting will probably be as fun as the real hunting trip. :)

I believe I would just shoot the same load and rifle I was going to deer hunt with, good practice.

I think you're misinformed or confused with something else, depends on the concentration, it's commonly applied to the skin for scabies, and used extensively by the military for clothing, it's much safer that DEET.  ;)

I use 98% deet on my bare skin, and permethrin on my clothing, and still pick up some chiggers (redbugs in the south) every  time I go afield this time of year.  And I'm allergic apparently, because I continue to develop whelps weeks after exposure....I still have to get in the woods, can't help it.

We also have our share of those little ticks as well, but at least you can see 'um to pick 'um off.....

Maybe we'll have frost soon and  thin them out....

Thanx Tim; as a sufferer of chemical overdose I urge caution. We, as a culture, are pretty lax about reading labels and following safety precautions; just want to save somebody trouble if it was (is) an issue.

Unfortunately, researchers have revealed that some bugs have developed resistance to permethrin since it was first available, for instance, I've done some reading on the northern fowl mite because we had our home invaded by them, permethrin is substantially less effective above 68º"F, chiggers may be similar.

So how much deet do we need to apply to the armadillo diggs to keep them away? This could get very expensive.  ;D

I've found the 45-70 makes short work of Armadillos, but I recommend at least a 405 gr. bullet.   ;D :o

Seriously, if you kill them and let them lay, you won't be able to come around for a number of days until the stench dies down..... :(

I live in southern Missouri where the armadillo is not supposed to be native, they are an "invasive species" I guess, or as we say , possum on the half shell. I certainly intend to hunt them, they may well replace the groundhogs of my childhood as targets of opportunity.
As for the ticks, they are terrible right now, and so are the chiggers. I have been taking my allergy pills by the handful and it will be a week at least before I stop looking like a strawberry. The temp was near 90 2 days ago, this morning it was 38 on the porch, it is wonderful. I have read that ticks can go for almost 2 years without eating and survive freezing. Burning underbrush helps but is not practical. What I want is some of that stuff you rub on your back and it makes your blood poison like my dogs. Meanwhile I will try several combinations that were suggested here. Insects will probably inherit the earth in the end.

If it's on your own land, try raising Guinea fowl.  They eat ticks like crazy...

That may be trading one evil for another, birds carry Northern Fowl Mites and Chicken Mites that invade homes, a horror story to wish on no one.  :(
