Loads higher than manual claims
« on: September 12, 2011, 08:20:54 PM »
Went to the range today, with my Weatherby 338-378.  I have been loading 99grs of IMR-7828, pushing a Nosler 250gr Partition.  Nosler 6 reloading manual says I should be getting 2976fps.

I took my Chrony to the range and checked my velocity.  3040fps is the average I got out of five shots fired, with a + or - 2fps spread.  I was a bit surprised by the results being higher than Nosler said they would be.

Tighter bore, longer barrel, higher altitude, lower barametric pressure, different temperature, and planets aligned.   ;D

Higher velocity comes at the expense of higher pressure. I'd reduce that load.

It's just like we always try to explain to the guys new to reloading.  These manuals are a guideline only.  As has been said, there are many variables all the way down to differences in test equipment and weather.  If this is a load you've been using and you feel comfortable with it, there's no reason to change.  If on the other hand, you feel you're pushing the envelope, then change it. But that manual is still nothing but a guideline.

No crimp.  I've been shooting this load for a couple of years.  No high pressure signs, and is a full grain lower than what I used to shoot.  Other load showed no pressure signs as well, but was not as accurate as I wanted.  Dropping one full grain tightened the group up.  I have a six and three quarters inch group, down to three and a quarter inch group at 400 yards.  This is the load I used for the Grizzly two years ago.  I had just never shot through the Chrony before.

The reason I wanted to use the Chrony was, my shots were flatter in the 100 and 150 yard range, than the ballistics table said they should be.  Also they were higher out at 600 and 700 yards than they were supposed to be, according to the ballistics table.  I just got a ballistics program for my computer and decided to compare all my factors.  I am happy with my results, and plesently surprised.

The Weatherby has a 26" barrel, with a 2" brake.

Three boxes of shells and it's time for another container of powder.  I now buy the larger containers, I think it is 8 pounds.

That's what, 64 FPS from a 3000 FPS load? That's about 2% difference. Standard deviation is sometimes higher than that. Factory loading data is not an oracle, there will always be some sort of difference. As long as everything else appears to be in line, enjoy it. You could have even had your chronograph a foot or two closer than they did.

my first two chronagraphs were the cheap chronys. I allways thought my velocitys were a bit high. When compared to my buddys ohler the chronys read between 100 and 200 fps faster. I bought a good pact and found that it read about identical to my buddys ohler.
